Suspect shot; deputy injured

Louisiana State Police – Region II Criminal Investigation Detectives were requested to investigate a police officer shooting in Rayne on Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting took place at 715 Malvern Street in Rayne, around 12:45 pm. when Rayne police officers and Acadia Parish sheriff’s deputies went to the residence on Malvern Street to serve a search warrant on the residence.

While attempting to serve the warrant, the suspect began backing up in his vehicle in an attempt to flee the scene. While the suspect was fleeing from the residence, he ran over a sheriff deputy, the deputy then fired his weapon in attempt to stop the suspect.

The suspect tried to escape through Our Mother of Mercy Cemetery. His vehicle became disabled by a gravestone.

The suspect was struck at least once and was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

The deputy was also transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

The name of the suspect and officers involved will not be released at this time, as the investigation is still ongoing.

Because the shooting involved both Rayne police and sheriff’s deputies, Chief Carroll Stelly and Sheriff Wayne Melancon asked State Police to conduct the investigation.
