Tax collection up in Kaplan, Abbeville

Things must be good in the town of Kaplan because the community had a big 32 percent increase in sales tax collection this past July.

The city, which normally collects around $43,000 in a month, took in $56,000.

The parish, as a whole, had positive numbers in collections for July.

Even the Kaplan Hospital District 1 also had a big increase in collections. The district collected $128,800 or about a $21,000 increase.

Abbeville and the town of Delcambre each had positive gains in collections.

Abbeville had a collection increase of 14 percent, while Delcambre collected 13 percent more.

Abbeville collected $323,300 this past July, compared to $283,000 last year.

Delcambre had an increase of $2,000 and collected $14,100.

The School Board and Police Jury had an increase of five percent in collections. The School Board collected $30,000 more or $681,300. The Police Jury collected $1 million or $25,000 more.

The SHeriff’s tax collection had an increase of three percent. The Sheriff Collection $493,0000 this past July.

Not all of the news was good.

Not many people stayed in hotels and motels in July and the Tourist Commission felt it.

The commission’s collection was down 26 percent. or about $4,000 less.

The tourist commission collected $10,700 compared to $14,500 a year ago in July.
