Theriot has 1,000 pairs of shoes to give away

Hilary Theriot has more shoes than anyone in Vermilion Parish. She has at least 1,000 pair of shoes, and she is giving them away to the needy.

Theriot, a senior at Vermilion Catholic High School, has been collecting donated shoes from residents from Gueydan over the last year. It began as a Girl Scout project to receive a Gold Award (equal to Eagle Scout for Boy Scouts) for Gueydan Troop 251.

She received help from St. Peters Catholic Church in Gueydan in June when Gueydan residents would drop off unused shoes at the church. In a four-week period, she had close to a 1,000 pairs of shoes.

Family Missions, a local group that travels to Mexico, has been delivering pairs of Theriot’s shoes to Mexico whenever they go.

Recently, the mission went to Mexico in November and brought a shoes to the needy. Theriot heard a story of how a little boy, who wore old cowboy boots, received a pair of shoes from Theriot’s collection.

“They told me that thelittle boy put on his new shoes and could not stop hopping, skipping and jumping around with his new shoes,” Theriot said. “When we heard the story, me and my mom began tearing up. I wish I was there, but knowing I was there in spirit.

“It was humbling.”

On Tuesday, she and her mother Karen delivered around 75 pairs of lady and girl shoes to the Vermilion Parish Outreach Office of Faith House.

Cindy Triche, who is the outreach director for Faith House, was happy to receive the shoes. She said Theriot’s shoes will be donated to battered women and their children.

“We help the women start over,” said Triche. “Most women leave with only the clothes on their backs. We help them with clothing, shoes or personal hygiene.”

Theriot’s shoes will be available for women and children who left their home with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

The VC senior has 700 pairs of shoes in her garage at her home in Gueydan. She has them sorted out in boxes and her mission is to have them all go to Mexico for the needy.

“I would love to bring them one day,” she said.
