The Lake Arthur Tigers returned to action in the Midland Holiday Spectacular Basketball Tournament at 7:00 p.m. Monday night, December 29, 2008 in semifinal action against the powerful Abbeville High School Wildcats, but were unceremoniously dumped from the winner’s bracket by their Vermilion Parish rivals by a final score of 66-51.

Lake Arthur jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, but Abbeville went on a 17-0 run to take a commanding 17-4 lead after the first eight minutes of action.

The Tigers were hurt by the early foul problems of starter Darius Mitchell, who sat the majority of the first half on the pine for his team.

The Tigers played better in the second quarter, but were continually beaten on the backboards by the taller Abbeville squad, which resulted in several cheap putbacks by the Wildcats on the offensive end of the court.

When the first half was completed, the Tiger found themselves trailing by a dozen points at 34-22.

Abbeville poured it on in the third period, as Lake Arthur committed numerous turnovers and missed several easy layups in the back and forth affair.

When the eight minute frame was completed, Abbeville had increased their lead to 51-32 and figured to coast to the easy victory.

But the Fighting Tiger roared back midway through the final period, as Abbeville showed cracks in their armor against the furious Tiger fullcourt pressure.

Lake Arthur managed to cut the lead to single digits late in the contest, but ultimately ran out of gas despite outscoring the Wildcats 19-14 in the final stanza.

When the final horn sounded, the Tigers had dropped into the consolation bracket, as Abbeville took a 66-51 tournament win.

Durrell Prudhomme led the Tigers with 15 points, including a thunderous dunk in the second period which drew loud applause from the boisterous crowd.

Mitchell managed to add 13 tallies in his brief playing time on the court, while teammate Nick Klein tossed in 12. Colby Lavergne and DeAngelo Thompson each contributed four points, while senior guard Josh Turner tossed in the final three points for the Tigers.

Abbeville was led by Keelon Lee with 15 points, while teammates Tremaine Williams and Macumba Ardoin each threw in 11 tallies. Brandon Lee also hit double digits with 10 markers for the victorious Wildcats.

Lake Arthur hit on 14 field goals, four three-pointers, and were 13 of 19 from the free throw line.

Klein fired in three three-pointers, while Prudhomme added one for Lake Arthur.

Abbeville hit on 23 field goals, three treys, and were a poor 11 of 26 from the charity stripe.

With the loss, the Tigers fell to 11-3 on the season.
