It was a bad day for Lake Arthur baseball and softball fans this past Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the Field of Dreams Complex, as both the Tigers and Lady Tigers were beaten in District 5-2A contests by the visiting Welsh Hounds and Lady Hounds by scores of 6-2 and 13-3 respectively.

Welsh 6 Tigers 2

In the boys contest, the underdog Greyhounds broke open a tie game with four runs late in the contest to upset the home team in the district opener for both squads.

Welsh scored the first two runs in the top of the second inning, but the Tigers rallied back in their half of the frame to plate two runs of their own and tie the contest at 2-2.

The game would remain tied until the pivotal fifth inning, as the Hounds scored a single tally to take a slim 3-2 lead.

After the Tigers could not counter in the bottom of the inning, Welsh tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their margin to 6-2.

The Tigers could not solve Welsh starting pitcher Weston Broussard, who went the full seven innings and allowed just four hits while improving his individual record to 5-1 on the season.

Jordan Marcantel was the hard luck loser for Lake Arthur, although he gave up just six hits on the evening before giving way to reliever Josh Savage late in the contest.

Dakota Humphrey led the Hounds offensively with two hits, while teammate Braden Jolie added a double and an RBI for the Hounds.

Marcantel led the Tigers with two hits, one of which was a double.

With the loss, the Tigers fell to 7-2 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

Welsh improved to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in the district standings with the road win.

Welsh 13 LA 3

The Welsh Lady Hounds picked up 11 hits off Lake Arthur pitching to break open a close game early on and coast to a 13-3 District 5-2A road softball win.

Each team scored a run in their half of the first inning, and the Lady Tigers seemed primed for an upset after taking a 2-1 advantage after two frames.

But the Lady Hounds stormed back in the top of the third inning, plating seven runs to take a commanding 8-2 lead before the home team could extinguish the offensive fireworks.

Welsh added a single tally in the top of the fourth to increase their advantage to 9-2, but Lake Arthur showed signs of life in the bottom of the fifth, plating a single run to cut the lead to 9-3.

But Welsh finished strong, scoring four times in the top of the seventh to move ahead by a 13-3 score and ultimately winning this district encounter.

Kailie Mier went the distance for the Lady Hounds, striking out seven and improving her individual record to 4-5 on the season.

Kadie Bonin went the distance for the Lady Tigers in defeat.

Leading the offensive hit parade for Welsh were Lauren Pickle, 3-5, with a double and a triple; Whitney Fox, 3-4; Jessica LeBlanc, 2-4; and Jamie Doucet, 1-3 with three runs scored.

Saidi Woods led Lake Arthur with a double in three at bats.

With the win, Welsh improved to 6-9 and 2-1 in the league, while the Lady Tigers fell to 1-2 in District 5-2A play with the home defeat.
