Tigers roll over Jennings 35-7

INDEPENDENCE – A few years ago the Independence Tigers made a playoff run that saw them advance to the 2005 3A Semi-Finals with a lot of young players. The Tigers came back the following season and made it all the way to the Dome to play for the championship just one year later. Coach Keith Carona is hoping for the same scenario this season and his Tigers want to take it all the way!

The young Independence Tigers opened the Class 3A Playoffs last week as the 7th seed in the state and they played host to the 26th Jennings Bulldogs. The Tigers came away with their best outing of the season as they dominated the game and won 35-7 to advance to this weeks state Regional Round of the 3A Playoffs.

The Tigers led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter and then put the metal to the petal in the second quarter to extend their lead to 21-0 at halftime. Independence had good balance in the game on offense as the Tigers rushed for 63-yards and they passed for 163 in their win over Jennings.

The Tigers also forced three turnovers and committed none and they surrendered just 32-yards rushing in the game. But if there was one dim spot it was that the Tigers had 96-yards in penalties in the game.

Junior Quarterback Chris Carter completed 10-of-14 pass attempts for 163-yards and two touchdowns. Carter threw a 34-yard strike to Darrin Arline and another 9-yard pass to Arline in the fourth quarter to help lead the Tigers to their eighth win of the season.

The Tigers also got a huge play from Desmond Copeland. Copeland scooped up a fumble and returned it 42-yards for a touchdown. The Tigers extended their lead to 28-0 in the third quarter before the Bulldogs got on the board later in the third.

Independence now moves on to the second round of the playoffs as they will play host to 10th seeded Cecilia this Friday Night. Cecilia beat Brusly 35-20 last week. The winner will move on to face the winner of the Westlake versus Patterson game in the state quarter-finals.

If Independence wins they would have to travel next week regardless of who wins out of the Westlake versus Patterson game.
