Tigers trounce Hornets 39-0

ALBANY – The Independence Tigers wasted no time in putting away their opponent last week as they scored four first quarter touchdowns in their 39-0 win over the struggling Albany Hornets.

Independence is now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in district 10-3A play and they face a big game this week as they play host to the 5-1 Bogalusa Lumberjacks in a key district contest.

Junior Quarterback Chris Carter led the Tigers by completing 7-of-10 passes for 117-yards and he rushed for another 56-yards. Independence was spectacular on defense in shutting out the Hornets.

Independence held the Hornets to 11-yards of total offense, forced seven turnovers, picked off five passes and returned an interception for a touchdown in their shutout win over the Hornets.

It took Independence just four plays to put the game away as the Chris Carter opened the route with a 37-yard run to give Independence a 6-0 lead. The Tigers Defense then put the next touchdown on the scoreboard.

Sedric Milton stepped in front of an Albany pass and picked it off and then returned it 21-yards for a touchdown. James Cervantes then tacked on the PAT and Independence led 13-0 with less than three minutes off the clock.

The Defense then shut down the Albany Offense and quickly gave the ball back to their offense. The Tigers then put together an eight-play drive that went fifty-yards with the end result being a four-yard touchdown run by Reggie Sims and with the Cervantes PAT Independence led 20-0 in the first quarter.

The Tigers then sealed the deal later in the first quarter when Chris Carter found Darrin Airline on a 29-yard scoring strike to make the score 26-0 in favor of the visiting Tigers.

The Tigers would get two more scores in the game including a seven-yard touchdown run by Marshall Bellazen. Independence returns home this week after a four game road trip. The Tigers have their final three games at home beginning this week against Bogalusa.
