Tigers trounce Wildcats 40-2
INDEPENDENCE – The Independence defense picked up where the left off from the second half of last weeks game against 5A power John Ehret. The Tigers Defense dominated Varnado in a 40-2 win over the visiting Wildcats.
Varnado was coming off a big win over Sumner in which they scored 38 points but the Wildcats never had a chance against the Tigers Defense. “I thought we played well. Varnado is an athletic team and our defense did a good job of containing them,” said Tigers Coach Keith Carona.
The Tigers Defense limited Varnado to 99-yards of total offense, six first downs, they forced two fumbles and did not give up a single point. With the Tigers Defense playing solid the Independence Offense was churning out numbers as well.
Independence racked up 348-yards of total offense including 278-yards rushing. The Tigers jumped out a 14-0 lead and never looked back and they extended their lead to 34-0 by halftime.
The rout began in he first quarter when Marshan Bellazen scored on a 16-yard run. James Cervantes added the PAT and the Tigers led 7-0. Bellazen would find pay dirt later in the quarter with a four-yard run and with the PAT Independence led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
With a 14-0 lead the Tigers began to pull away from the Wildcats in the second quarter with a twenty point outburst. The Tigers embarked on a nice drive that resulted in their third rushing touchdown of the game.
Altron Drake took a handoff from Chris Carter and plunged in on a one-yard run to make the score 20-0 in favor of the Tigers. The Tigers played sound throughout the game and did not make many mistakes in the contest.
Independence committed just four penalties and had no turnovers against Varnado. Independence would add to their lead when Reggie Simms scored on a five-yard run and QB Chris Carter ended the half when he tossed a 22-yard strike to Elroy Duncan giving the Tigers a comfortable 34-0 at halftime.
Independence would score once more in the game and that would come in the third quarter when Simms rambled in from 25-yards out to seal the deal for the Tigers. Independence went on to win the game 40-2.
Independence improved to 1-1 and will hit the road this week to take on the Class 4A Salmen Spartans. Salmen is also 1-1 after a 28-7 loss last week to John Curtis.
