Top-ranked Family Christian cruises past Northside Christian
CROWLEY – Class C’s top-ranked team proved to be too much for No. 8 Northside Christian Thursday evening in a non-district matchup at Miller Stadium.
Family Christian’s Mason Diaz and Chris White combined for a one-hitter, leading the Flames to their 15th victory of the season, 7-1 over the home-standing Warriors.
The Flames improved to 15-4 on the season while the Warriors fell to 5-5.
The Flames got on the board early despite not geting a single hit in the first two innings.
In the second inning, J.J. Holmes drew a leadoff walk and then stole second base. He moved up to third base on a groundout by Diaz and scored on another groundout by M.J. Frazier.
Another leadoff walk in the third inning sparked a three-run outburst for the Flames.
Chris White was issued a free pass to start the inning. White later scored on Ben Chauvin’s one-out triple to the right center field gap. Rich Hopkins followed with another run-scoring triple before crossing the plate himself on a wild pitch to put the Flames up 4-0.
The Warriors answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame.
Jordan Monte drew a leadoff walk for the Warriors and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Nick Zaunbrecher.
The Flames added to their lead in the fifth inning when they scored three more runs on two hits, three walks and two errors.
Joseph Trahan suffered the loss after giving up seven runs on five hits and six walks. He struck out five in 4 1/3 innings.
Josh Wheeler had the lone hit for the Warriors, a single in the first innings.
Hopkins paced the Flames with a 3-for-4 performance that included a triple and an RBI. Chauvin was 2-for-4 with a triple and a RBI and Frazier had one hit.
The Warriors return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Assembly Christian of New Iberia. First pitch for that contest is slated for 4 p.m.
