UCLA eliminates Lady Cajuns

LOS ANGELES - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team played a hard-fought game early on before No. 5 UCLA pulled away late in a 10-1, five-inning contest on Sunday at the 2010 NCAA Los Angeles Super Regional on Sunday.

The loss brings the 2010 season to a close for UL, who finished with a record of 45-18. It was the 11th season in a row in which the Cajuns won at least 45 games in a season.

The 2010 season saw the Cajuns advance to NCAA Regional play for the 12th-straight season and their second trip to the NCAA Super Regionals in three years.

With the win, UCLA advances to the 2010 Women's College World Series.

The Bruins were the first team to light the scoreboard. A two-out, RBI-single by Danielle Yudin scored GiOnna DiSalvatore in the first frame.

Melissa Verde put the Cajuns in position to tie the contest in the first at bat for UL. She singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. But two fly outs ended the frame before a run could cross the plate.

Erikka Murphy looked to get the Cajuns even with the Bruins in the third inning. A single and steal put the speedy sophomore on second base. She tied the game up at 1-1 after Verde reached first on an error when a ground ball got past the Bruins' infield.

But a two-out, two-run homer by Kaila Shull swung the advantage back in UCLA's favor in the top of the fourth.

The Bruins began to pull to away in the top of the fifth. UCLA was able to load the bases on three singles before another RBI-hit from Yudin tacked on a run. Samantha Camuso followed with a grand slam to centerfield to put the game away. Another two-run blast by B.B. Bates sealed the run-rule win.

It was just the third time UL had been mercy-ruled this season with two of the losses coming at the hands of UCLA.

The Cajuns struggled at the plate, scattering just four hits. Verde and Murphy each had hit with two more coming from Gabriele Bridges and Lana Bowers.

Brittany Cuevas suffered the loss. The Bruins were able to score 10 runs on 11 hits. She struck out three batters and walked two. The senior from Brazoria, Texas finishes her career with 65 wins and 677 strikeouts in 626.0 innings pitched.
