Unemployment in parish hits 6 percent
Unemployment in Eunice/St. Landry Parish rose by 30 percent in December 2008 over the same month a year earlier.
According to the Louisiana Workforce Commission monthly report, 6 percent of those looking for work were unemployed in December.
That compares to 4.2 percent a year earlier and to 5.4 percent in November 2008.
Putting faces on the numbers, there were 2,260 persons out of work in St. Landry, compared to 2,015 a month earlier and to 1,548 a year earlier.
Evangeline Parish's unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in December 2008, compared to 5.5 percent in November and to 4.7 percent a year earlier.
In Acadia Parish, unemployment stood at 4.7 percent. That compares to 4.3 percent in November and 3.5 percent 12 months earlier.
Employed persons in St. Landry in December numbered 35,110. In Acadia, that number was 25,076 and in Evangeline it was 11,431.
The state-wide unemployment rate in December was 5.9 percent, compared to 4 percent a year earlier.
The lowest rate among the 64 parishes was Lafayette at 3.6 percent; the highest were East and West Carroll Parishes at 13.4 percent.
Louisiana was the only state to show an increase (3,700) in nonfarm jobs from November to December, the Commission reported.
The national unemployment rate in December was 7.2 percent.
