Update - Bank of Commerce and Trust Company in Mermentau robbed at gunpoint

By Howell Dennis

The Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a bank robbery which took place Monday morning at the Bank of Commerce and Trust Co. in Mermentau.

According to initial reports, the robbery involved two black males who held the bank up at gunpoint escaping with an undisclosed amount of cash. They were apparently disguised in black gloves, hoodies and Mardi Gras style masks. Details were still sketchy as authorities were still in the initial stages of their investigation, however, according to Sheriff Wayne Melancon one key clue has already been recovered.

“We have located the bike that was used in the robbery,” said Melancon. “If the bike is not stolen this may be a big break.”

Witnesses reported that after holding up the bank the suspects appeared to be heading towards Jennings on the bike.

“My guys are still out in the field working on leads,” said Melancon. “Hopefully we can gather enough information to solve this one quickly.”
