Vermilion schools rank No. 11 in state

According to a statewide ranking report released by the Louisiana Department of Education, Vermilion Parish Schools recently learned that their District Performance Scores (DPS) placed them 11th out of 68, with score of 98.9 against the state average of 86.4. This places Vermilion first in the Acadiana Region (Region IV). District Performance Score by state definition, is a “roll-up” of all School Performance Scores (SPS).

The District Performance scores allow districts to compare themselves to other districts in the state using standard criteria which impacts student achievement.

“We owe a great deal of credit to the staff members at the school level, and the parish-wide focus on our Reading Programs,” stated Vermilion Schools Superintendent, Randy Schexnayder, as he enthusiastically announced the Vermilion Parish Schools District Performance Scores at a Principal’s meeting on Wednesday.

School Year 2007-2008 Vermilion School Accountability Scores reflect:

8 - Three Star Schools (SPS 100-119.9)

8 - Two Star Schools (SPS 80-99.9)

2 – One Star Schools (SPS 60-79.9)

Vermilion’s highest SPS was recorded by Indian Bayou Elementary at 117.0. The highest Middle School was Erath Middle School at 107.3, and Erath High School was the highest among the high schools with 115.8.

The greatest growth in Vermilion was Jesse Owens Elementary with a growth of 15.7 points from a score of 90.4 in 2007, to 106.1 in 2008.

Other notable growth was from Seventh Ward Elementary with 14.9 points and Erath High with 14.7.

Nine of Vermilion’s eighteen schools are eligible for monetary rewards based upon their growth achieved during Spring 2008 testing.

According to Superintendent Schexnayder, “Each year I am amazed that our school system generates high School Performance Scores in conjunction with continued growth. These continued successes should be directly credited to the students, parents, teachers, and administrators at the school and district level, which comprise the Vermilion Education Community.”

Since the implementation of the state Accountability Program in 1998, Vermilion has grown 22.8 points and climbed 11 spots. This is the fifth-highest growth in the state.
