Versatile Lady Bulldogs stop Lady Demons
By: LANCE REED
Two of the toughest teams in District 6-2A clashed Tuesday night in Ville Platte.
The Lady Demons of Mamou made the trip to Ville Platte to face the very tough Lady Bulldogs who came into the game with an undefeated district record. The Lady Bulldogs are the defending District 6-2A champs, and they were looking to continue on that route to win the district. Mamou came into the game with an 8-7 record overall, but this would be their first district contest of the season.
The contest was close for the entire first half. The two teams had met before so they were very familiar with each otherís style of play. After trading buckets for the first couple of minutes, the Lady Bulldogs slowly pulled away. Great defense allowed the VPHS girls to get some steals and make some crucial shots at the right time. Deagenee Thomas was huge under board. She led the VPHS girls in rebounds and finished the night with 12 points. Her effort helped her team to a 12-7 lead after the first eight-minute period.
The second period was a complete see-saw battle. Mamouís Mia Melvin got hot and helped her team tremendously. Not only was she doing a marvelous job under the basket, but she was hitting buckets as well. She finished the night with a team-high 19 points and a great second period. She also led the team with 12 boards. Melvin’s performance was inspiring and got her team rolling.
Ville Platte got a big effort from youngster Breanna O’Conner in the second frame. She jumped up with a few steals and then turned them into points. She scored eight points in the frame and went on to have 12 points in the game. Her effort allowed the Lady Bulldogs to keep the momentum split down the middle when the Lady Demons were fighting hard to take it completely. The two teams really battled hard in the second period, but the Lady Bulldogs managed to take a 28-22 lead into their locker room.
The second half was pretty much a mirror image of the first half. The two teams never let up. The Lady Bulldogs showed their versatility by getting different faces in on offense. The play of Adriana Nelson was compelling. She nailed down 10 points in the third period and finished the night with a team-high 14 points. Nelson came out of nowhere and shocked the Lady Demons. Melvin tried to answer back for the Lady Demons. She came up with nine points and didn’t let up under the basket. The Lady Bulldogs out-scored the Lady Demons 15-12 in the frame. Nelson’s performance seemed to take the life of the Lady Demons.
Up 43-34, Ville Platte just had to keep up what they were doing. They did just that! Despite the valiant effort from the Lady Demons, the Lady Bulldogs outscored their opponent 12-11. They were 8 of 12 at the free throw line, which really kept the game in their favor. While Mamou was never really out of the game, they could not come up with a way to overcome the VPHS lead. Macy Jones and Melvin played really hard in the final period. Melvin scored six points, while Jones ended the night with nine points. Ville Platte’s 55-45 victory was impressive on all levels and not just to the VPHS fans and coaches.
“We went into the game trying to keep their key players from beating us,” Mamou Head Coach Keith Morgan said. “They showed how good they are. Their other players beat us. We were never really out of the game, but they did what they needed to do to win.”
Mamou returns to action Tuesday night. They will host the Westminster Crusaders in another district contest. Ville Platte High has the district bye and will have the night off.
