With hard-fought determination and poise, the Ville Platte Minors battled and found a way to make it into the semi-finals of the District Seven Tournament.
The semi-finals were held late Wednesday night after press time. Look for that game and other results from the District Seven Tournament in Sunday’s sports section.
Ville Platte destroyed Moss Bluff 19-0 in their opening contest. The local boys scored five runs in the first inning, and then pushed 14 runs home in the second inning.
Drew Ardoin and Hayston Fontenot combined for a no-hitter and the shut out.
Ville Platte took advantage of two errors and put up 10 hits in the blowout contest. Fontenot and Tanner Dupre were both 2-2 on the day. Jacques Fontenot hit a triple and Ardoin roped a double in the game.
Ville Platte battled in a game that mimicked a heavyweight boxing match in their second contest. They took on Oakdale and went six innings before claiming a one-run victory.
Dylan Doucet scored in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 1-1. Doucet reached base on an error and scored on a single from Caleb Soileau.
Oakdale responded with a run in the second inning to regain the lead, 2-1.
Once again, the host team fired back with a run on their own. Hayston Fontenot walked and scored on a single from Zachary Thomas.
The third trip to the plate seemed to be the charm Ville Platte needed. Jacques Fontenot was hit by a pitch and Kane Deshotel walked. The two runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball. A triple from Ardoin scored both runners and gave Ville Platte a 4-2 lead. Ardoin scored on a triple from Dylan Doucet. A single from Jacob Dupre moved Doucet home, making it a 6-2 ball game.
Oakdale was far from done. They used a series of errors and walks to tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the fourth inning.
Neither team scored in the fifth inning, forcing an extra frame. Ville Platte held Oakdale, despite a single with two outs.
Then, the VP boys found a way to get the job done. Caleb Soileau led off the inning with a single. He moved to second base on a fielder’s choice from Jacob Dupre. A single from Hayston Fontenot pushed Soileau, who was the winning run, over to third base.
The next batter was Thomas. With two balls and one strike, the next pitch got by the catcher, allowing Soileau to score and end the contest with Ville Platte the victor by a score of 7-6.
“We told the boys if they could win this game, they could win any game,” remarked Ville Platte Head Coach Cain Thomas. “They just kept playing hard.”
Ville Platte took on DeRidder Wednesday. The finals are tonight beginning at 5:30 p.m. weather permitting. The VP boys are trying to get back to the Dixie Minors State Tournament, which will be held in Ruston next July 11-13.
