Vows exchanged between Bourgeois, Hensgens at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Church Point

CHURCH POINT - In a beautiful ceremony on Saturday, October 1 at 6:30 in the evening, Miss Heidi Elizabeth Bourgeois and Mr. David Braxton Hensgens exchanged sacred marriage vows before the altar of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Church Point. The Most Reverend Monsignor Keith DeRouen was the celebrant of the nuptial Mass.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Marty Bourgeois of Church Point. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Henry Hebert Sr. of Iota and the late Mr. Rubert Reed. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Anthony Bourgeois of Church Point are the paternal grandparents of the bride, and were also married in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Church Point 52 years ago.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Hensgens Sr. of Crowley. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Braxton I. Moody III of Crowley and the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles N. Hensgens Sr.

Present in the sanctuary and serving as altar boys for the ceremony were Hayden Thomas Bourgeois and Waylon Guy Bourgeois, cousins of the bride, and Jacob Paul Link and Dennis Joseph Hensgens lll, nephews of the groom.

Readers of the sacred scripture were Beverley Moody Lagroue, aunt and godmother of the groom, who read Isaiah 5:1-7, and Carmen Reed Sims, aunt of the bride, who read Philippians 4:6-9. The prayer of the faithful was read by Charlotte Moody Leonards, aunt of the groom.

Presenting the offertory gifts were Grace Marie Hensgens, Eleanor Claire Hensgens, Anna Katherine Hensgens and Camille Therese Trahan, nieces of the groom. These young ladies also served as greeters of the guests at the wedding.

As guests entered the church, they were seated to the sounds of softly played organ music. Enhancing the beauty of the church and signifying the sacred occasion of the Sacrament of Marriage were the lovely arrangements of bridal roses, white lilies, and hydrangeas placed on the pews of the main aisle. Of special meaning was an arrangement near the altar designed by Karl Broussard, cousin of the bride. The arrangement of large urns was surrounded by greenery, symbolizing the Wedding Feast of Cana. The wedding took place on the feast day of St. Theresa of Lisieux. In commemoration, a beautifully painted portrait of The Little Flower, a wedding gift to the couple, was surrounded by roses in the arrangement.

Providing the program of nuptial music were Alberta Lyons, organist, Brett Babineaux, trumpeteer, Thomas Benoit, violinist, and Lainey Guidry, vocalist.

As the long awaited time of the wedding approached, the mother of the bride was escorted into the church by her eldest son, Luke Anthony Bourgeois. The groom’s mother was escorted by her son, Johann Christian Hensgens II. The mothers were seated during the endearing song, “You Will Always Be a Child.”

In the traditional gesture of honor, guests rose from their seats as the doors of the church opened to the strains of “Trumpet Voluntary,” revealing the petite silhouette of the lovely young bride softly draped beneath a veil of silk illusion.

She was lovingly escorted by her father in slow precession to the main altar of the church and presented to her groom.

For her wedding day, the bride chose a lovely gown of ivory silk taffeta. The strapless gown featured a sweetheart neckline with a softly pleated bodice. An empire band led to the full shirred skirt that flowed into a chapel train. The bride wore a two tier veil of silk illusion of fingertip and cathedral length. The bride chose for her wedding jewelry beautiful pearl earrings and a single pearl drop necklace. To further complement the simple elegance of her gown, the bride carried a beautiful traditional bouquet of delicate bridal roses in hues ivory and soft pink. With her bouquet she held an aqua blue crystal rosary, a treasured gift to her on her wedding day from her grandmother, Mrs. Rita Hebert. The rosary was a childhood gift to Mrs. Hebert from Father Joseph Lafleur. In keeping with bridal tradition, the rosary was noted as something old and blue. Her wedding gown was something new, and a beautiful lace handkerchief was borrowed from her grandmother, Mrs. Connie Bourgeois. The sixpence worn in her bridal shoe was a gift from Mary Grace Leonards.

The bride’s honor attendants were her sisters, Kathryn Anne Bourgeois, who served as maid of honor, and Hailey Bourgeois Duplechin, who was matron of honor.

Also attending to the bride were Mary Gayle Hensgens and Christina Margaret Hensgens, sisters of the groom; Mary Grace Leonards, cousin of the groom; and Anna Frances Brown, friend of the bride. Mary Kate Bourgeois, younger sister of the bride was junior bridesmaid.

The bridesmaids wore formal strapless gowns of navy blue duchess satin. The slight sweetheart necklines framed the waisted bodices, and the long straight skirts completed the lovely gowns of the maids. As a special touch, they held silver tussie mussies filled with ivory roses for their bouquets.

The youngest sisters of the bride, Jillian Claire Bourgeois and Elizabeth Grace Bourgeois, served as flower girls. The charming little girls wore dresses of the same navy blue duchess satin. The petite dresses were sleeveless with a jewel neckline and tied with flowing sashes. They carried small baskets of white hydrangeas.

The flower girls were escorted by the two youngest brothers of the bride, Noah Reed Bourgeois and Joachim David Bourgeois, and her two little nephews, Wesley Blake Duplechin and Jude Thomas Duplechin. The proud, young gentlemen were dressed in small formal black tuxedos.

Attending the groom as best man was his brother, Michael Charles Hensgens. The other groomsmen were Dennis Joseph Hensgens Jr. and Johann Christian Hensgens II, brothers of the groom; Luke Anthony Bourgeois, brother of the bride; Mark Stuart Brown and Drew Christopher Daigle, friends of the groom. Michael Edward Bourgeois, brother of the bride, was the junior groomsman.

Serving as ushers were Adam Blake Duplechin, brother-in-law of the bride; and Hans Leo Habetz, Jason Louis Lalande, Lance Paul Meche, Andre Christopher Robichaux and Matthew Allan Schmid, all friends of the groom. The men of the wedding party were attired in formal black tuxedoes with black neckties.

Mrs. Bourgeois, the former Nancy Reed, chose for her daughter’s wedding, an elegant suit of black silk crepe. The long sleeved evening jacket was accented with a collar of soft cascading ruffles. A beautiful multistrand pearl necklace and complementary accessories completed her attire. Two soft pink Blush roses tied with silk ribbon were worn on her wrist.

Mrs. Valerie Moody Hensgens, mother of the groom, wore a royal blue suit of silk dupioni. The fitted jacket featured a portrait collar with a double layer of silk ruching. Beautiful Blush roses were tied with silk ribbon to the evening bag carried by Mrs. Hensgens.

At the end of the nuptial Mass, the young couple carried a bouquet of roses to the Blessed Mother statue. As the beautifully sung Ave Maria filled the church, they entrusted to her care and protection their newly married lives.

As the couple returned to the altar, they presented roses to their mothers in a tender moment of gratitude.

Mr. and Mrs. Marty Bourgeois, parents of the bride hosted a reception for the newly wedded couple at the beautifully decorated Church Point Community Center.

Stately, tall arrangements of white roses, lilies, snap dragons, gladiolas, alstroemerias and hydrangeas graced the tables of the reception hall which were draped in ivory floor length linens. The reflection of votive lights enhanced the beauty of the gracefully appointed rose bowls filled with ivory and soft pink bridal roses. Adding to the elegance of the evening were the ivory linen draped chairs accented with black sashes.

The bridal cake service was placed in the center of a beautifully draped white canopy which served as a prominent focal point of the reception. The cake was a lovely three tiered confection dressed in ivory butter cream icing and embellished with the illusion of pearls around the tiers of the cake. A cluster of white roses was placed on the top layer of the cake, and dozens of bridal roses separated the three tiers, completing the design of the cake. Guests enjoyed delicious centers of pineapple and Bavarian cream.

The groom’s cake was an exceptionally delicious chocolate creation. The initials of the groom handsomely decked the top of the cake, personally designed by the bride.

After the traditional cutting of the cake, the bridal cake was served by her godmother, Mrs. Eloise Bourgeois. The groom’s cake was served by his godmother, Mrs. Beverly Lagroue.

For the wedding toast, the bride and groom used the heirloom silver goblets that were used by the groom’s parents at their wedding. The goblets had been a wedding gift to Mr. and Mrs. Braxton I. Moody Sr., the great-great-grandparents of the groom.

As the end of the wonderful reception drew near, the sounds of softly ringing bells signaled the guests to gather outside into the cool October evening.

Amid tender farewells, the newly wedded couple departed for their wedding trip to the Island of St. Thomas.

Mr. Hensgens is a graduate of Notre Dame High School and a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He is currently employed with Eustis Engineering Services in New Orleans.

Mrs. Hensgens is a graduate of Notre Dame High School and is currently pursuing a degree in business.

Upon their return from St. Thomas, the young couple will reside in New Orleans.
