VP Cajunettes attend Area Four Day

The Louisiana Volunteers for Family and Community (LVFC) Association Area Four Day was held in Crowley June 12. Evangeline VFC members attending the event were Joyce Coreil, Earleen Boyce and Lynn Landreneau.

Dr. Ronnie Levy, the Acadiana Parish chairman, gave a welcome; and state officers and parish presidents were recognized. Several informative speakers addressed the 105 VFC members in attendance.

Nikki LeMarie’s topic was called “The Marriage Garden.” To have a healthy marriage, she said, a couple must nurture their relationship. Some ways to do this include: making and honoring promises, expanding your strengths, doing the work of loving, cultivating compassion for your partner, turning differences into blessings and giving back to your community.

Cile Guidry, the second speaker’s, topic was on making homes accessible for seniors, thereby enabling them to stay in their home.

Dr. Kevin Courville, MDFACC, gave an instructive talk on women and heart disease, the number one killer of women. His talk was enhanced by showing slides, and he answered questions pertaining to heart problems and medicines.

Several demonstrations were presented by the VFC members. A Lafayette Parish member showed how to clean and store silver jewelry; another VFC member demonstrated the making of simple but stylish table decorations. Lynn Landreneau’s topic was “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Go Green.” Americans collect “stuff” because it signifies success, happiness, comfort and entertainment. If every person cut waste by five percent, America could lose 20 billion pounds of trash each year. She also showed several items made from recycled things.

Several parishes displayed educational boards. Acadia’s was Hats for Cancer; Evangeline’s was on recycling with an emphasis on using natural cleaners; Jeff Davis’s board was on heart health; Lafayette’s was a display about domestic violence; St. Martin’s was an exhibit on autism; and Vermilion’s topic was on osteoporosis.

Entertainment was provided by choral group Esprit de Corps.
