Walter L. Stelly
Funeral Services were held Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. in the Duhon Funeral Home Chapel in Rayne for Walter L. Stelly, 95, of Rayne. Father Garrett Savoie, associate pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, officiated for the services.
The family requested visitation be held Tuesday, July 23, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m. with a rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel in Rayne. Visitation continued on Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. till time of services.
Mr. Walter passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at 6:06 p.m. in the Rayne Guest Home in Rayne.
Mr. Stelly was a native of Rayne for many years. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a successful businessman, owner and operator of Stelly’s grocery and Stelly’s Washateria for many years in Duson and Rayne. He was also self- employed as a painter and farmer during his long life. He really enjoyed gardening and enjoyed sharing his harvest with family and friends. Mr. Stelly was the last survivor out of twelve children.
Survivors include two sons, Benny and wife, Susan Stelly, of Rayne and Michael and wife, Tammy Stelly, of Rayne; one daughter, Patsy and husband, Boo Guidry, of Rayne; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Walter in death was his wife, Mary Polly Arceneaux Stelly; one grandson, Jude Stelly; one granddaughter, Prudence Stelly; two sisters and nine brothers.
