Students at South Rayne Elementary will have to wait until Thursday morning to begin the 2013-2014 school year as a blaze in the school’s gym erupted Wednesday morning at approximately 2 a.m. As of press time, the State Fire Marshal had not determined the cause of the fire which was confined to a storage room in the northeast corner of the building. Vandalism or an electrical shortage are to blame for the blaze which was contained to that section of the gym. In addition to the fire, water damage was noted to part of the gym floor. Principal Amy Whatley and Acadia Parish Superintendent Johnny Bourque also mentioned the possibility of vandalism in two classrooms located near the gym. Updates can be found on our website at

UPDATE: School officials have also stated a special education room classroom was vandalized. Cola was also sprayed in the room, damaging a computer, in addition to a student desk rammed into a bookcase, damaging both items. A school bus that was located near the gym at the time of the fire was also vandalized.
