Welcome House celebrates Thanksgiving

By Katherine Miller

CROWLEY – This Thanksgiving those who are blessed have much to be thankful for. Helen De Fresco, Welcome House Secretary, on behalf of the organization, cannot express enough thanks this year.

The Welcome House is a Crowley fixture and non-profit shelter for homeless in the area.

Upon entering the office Wednesday morning, De Fresco, together with Henry “Papa Jack” Jackson, general manager, were busy with preparations for a Thanksgiving meal. De Fresco explained that Second Harvest Food Bank had donated supplies for the meal, as well as the Crowley Rotary Club, among many other Welcome House supporters.

The 23 residents and staff were extremely excited to host seven members of the Rotary Club, one of the organization’s large supporters. Menu items included turkey, ham, rice dressing, cranberry sauce, pea salad, corn, cornbread dressing and green bean casserole. Not to mention, an assortment of desserts to include pumpkin and pecan pies.

“We are just so blessed by God,” a teary-eyed De Fresco said. “Especially in hard times such as this, that people still think of others even when they may be struggling with their own bills.”

De Fresco, who has been with the Welcome House just over a month, is also excited about spending Thanksgiving with her new “surrogate” family on Thanksgiving Day with a meal similar to Wednesday’s.

“In my short time here, I have seen not a day go by without some type of blessing from people in the community,” she said. “Thanks to all those who care to give of their time and resources. Happy Thanksgiving!”

For those interested in donating to the Welcome House, there is an immediate need for such items as meat, cleaning products and personal hygiene products. For more information, contact the Welcome House by phone at 783-7066.
