There was a parade in the Town of Welsh this past Tuesday, February 17, 2009, but it had nothing to do with Mardi Gras, Christmas, or Homecoming.

The parade occurred at the Greyhound free throw line, where the home team shot 47 times in beating the district’s previously unbeaten team, the Lake Arthur Tigers, by a final score of 86-62 in a battle for league supremacy.

The Welsh win could set up another match with the Tigers for the District 5-2A Championship if Lake Arthur beats Kinder Friday. Both teams would then sport identical 5-1 league records necessitating a tie-breaking playoff game for all the marbles at a neutral site.

Welsh got off to an early 18-12 first quarter advantage, as Tiger center DeAngelo Thompson was forced to the bench with three fouls.

Lake Arthur stayed close in the second stanza, but Welsh used a tremendous advantage at the charity stripe to take the period 17-14 and grab a decisive 35-26 lead at the half.

The home team continued to baffle the visitors in the pivotal third period, using a 10-2 run to finish the stanza and take the period 20-10, as more Tiger starters were sent to the bench plagued with foul troubles.

Trailing 55-36 entering the fourth and final quarter, Lake Arthur found itself needing a minor miracle to claim victory, as they sped up the action at both ends of the court.

Still, the Greyhounds managed a 31-26 eight-minute run to bury their Jeff Davis Parish rivals and claim the 86-62 blowout league win.

The Greyhounds connected on 25 of an amazing 47 free throw attempts, compared to just 12-21 for Lake Arthur.

Each team hit on five three-pointers, and the home team led in field goals by just 27-22. But the disparity in free throw attempts led to the visitors’ downfall.

Darius Mitchell led the Tigers in scoring with 20 points, while teammates Durrell Prudhomme and Nick Klein notched 11. Aulden Robinson added eight, Colby Lavergne hit for five, while Josh Turner and Jacob Martin contributed four and three tallies respectively.

Justin Wilridge led the home team with 31 points, while Jaylin Sims and Dreylin Bias each hit for 15 markers.

With the loss, Lake Arthur fell to 17-7 for the season and 4-1 in league play, while Welsh improved to 14-11 and 5-1 in District 5-2A play.
