Will the Saints ever make it to the Super Bowl?

What do the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints have in common?

They are NFL teams that have never made it to the Super Bowl.

The Arizona Cardinals, a charter member of the league when it was founded in 1920 known as the Chicago Cardinals, were on that short list until their 32-25 win over Philadelphia in the NFC championship.

What do New Orleans and Detroit have in common? They are the only two teams that have never won an NFC Championship Game.

The Lions did win the NFL championship in 1935 and they dominated the NFL in the 1950’s with four division titles and three league championships - their last in 1957.

The Saints advanced to their first-ever NFC title game in 2006, falling to the Chicago Bears, 39-14.

The Lions own the longest drought without appearing in an NFC Championship Game - 17 years (1991) as they fell to the Washington Redskins.

As most Saints fans painfully remember, the team was founded in 1967 and went 16 years before they managed to finish a season with a .500 record and 21 years before having a winning season.

The best years were from 1987–1992 when the team made the playoffs four times and had winning records in the non-playoff seasons.

In the 2000 season, the Saints defeated the then- defending Super Bowl champions St. Louis Rams for the team’s first playoff win.

The Saints came close when they advanced to the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 13, 2007, after defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-24 in the divisional round of the playoffs.

They were the first team in NFL history to reach a conference championship after losing 13 or more games the previous season.

Since that NFC title game, New Orleans managed to go 7-9 and 8-8 as the Saints fans were forced to “Wait ‘til Next Year” again.

The Saints have had seven 8-8 seasons in their history and 26 years with losing records.

So if you were born in 1967 and followed the Saints since their beginning, you have only been able to celebrate a winning season six times.

So what would make the most unlikely match-up in next year’s title game? The Saints and Lions of course.

Who would have thought the Cardinals would be playing in the Super Bowl 43?

So maybe one day the Saints will come marching in - hopefully before New Orleans is the final team left to never advance to a Super Bowl.

Just don’t hold your breath - it may not happen this next season.
