Wiltz keys 28-6 Cecilia victory
ERATH – Marcus Wiltz scored three of Cecilia’s four touchdowns in leading the Bulldogs to a 28-6 District 6-3A victory over Erath last Friday.
Wiltz, who is also a key defensive player for the ’Dogs, scored on runs of 23, 78 and 54 yards to finish with 170 yards rushing on just six carries. And he sat out much of the final period as coach Terry Martin sent in his reserves.
The Bulldogs led 14-0 after one quarter of play, 21-0 at intermission and stretched their lead to 28-0 in the third period before allowing the Bobcats a touchdown in the final stanza.
The victory was Cecilia’s second league win in as many games while the Bulldog improved to 4-2 overall. Erath dropped to 3-3 and 0-2.
Wiltz wasted little time getting to the end zone, scoring on Cecilia’s fourth play from scrimmage from 23 yards out. Kaleb Hebert booted the first of his four PATs to make it 7-0.
An interception at the Erath 14 set up Cecilia’s next score. QB Kale Savoie hit Tyler Champagne for the TD from 10 yards out with 3:02 still remaining in the first period.
After stopping an attempted fourth down conversion by the Bobcats at the Cecilia 29, Wiltz overcame a holding penalty by racing 79 yards for another quick Bulldog score less than a minute into the second stanza and the Bulldog lead stretched to 21-0.
The teams then traded turnovers, with Bulldog Sage Guidry recovering an Erath fumble just inside Cecilia territory. Although the Bulldogs moved quickly to the Bobcat 17, the drive ended abruptly when the Bobcats picked off a Savoie pass at the Erath 23 and the half ended with the score still at 21-0.
Cecilia’s only second half touchdown was set up by a fake punt that turned into a first down pass from Savoie to Devin Broussard. Three plays later Wiltz broke loose for 54 yards and the score, giving the Bulldogs a comfortable 28-0 lead late in the third stanza.
With Martin starting to clear his bench, the Bobcats were able to get a drive going and got their only score of the game on the first play of the final stanza when Dason Bernard plunged in from one yard out.
Cecilia’s second team offense was able to move the ball all the way to the Erath 17 before the Bobcats picked off a Forest Huval pass to end the threat.
Bulldog running back Justin Zenon was also effective on the ground, gaining 68 yards on just eight plays while QB Kale Savoie completed 3-of-9 attempts for 53 yards and a TD.
Cecilia takes a break from 6-3A action when the Bulldogs travel west to Class 2A Vinton on Friday.
