Winners of the IRF Door Decorating contest announced
CROWLEY – As part of the International Rice Festival Celebration, the Crowley Garden Club sponsors an annual Rice Festival Door Decorating Contest in participation with the Festival Association. Each year the contest is open to all residence and businesses in the community. The winning doors were selected from dozens of entries created by community enthusiasts, who responded to the opportunity to support the International Rice Festival and promote the rice industry while honoring local farmers by decorating their front doors with an emphases on rice.
“Each year the competition becomes more competitive and one of the highlights of the contest was seeing the impressive flow of creativity emerging from one door to the next,” said Brittany Faulk, 2011 Garden Club Door Decorating Contest Chairman. “Some people take it really seriously, planning weeks ahead, securing their rice and carefully planning and laying out their design and some just add rice to an existing fall wreath which is perfectly suitable.”
The design does not have to reflect the festival theme, but can be incorporated into the design if participants choose. No matter how much time is invested in decorating, the judging is simple. The garden club judges study doors from the car, stepping outside to take a picture and give further inspection. The judge’s then reach a consensus shortly after the judging is complete and the contest chair calls each winner so the winners can be announced in the Crowley Post Signal before the Official Festival Opening. Each winner will then be recognized on stage during Friday’s festival activities at 11:55 a.m. on the main stage. At this point, “each winner is proud to have won, and anxious about preparing for next year’s competition.” says Faulk.
