Wolves beat Sumner in district play
LORANGER – The 6th ranked Loranger Wolves of Class 3A got off to a hot start in district 10-3A play last week against the Jewel Sumner Cowboys. Loranger beat the Cowboys 16-3 to open defense of their district crown.
“I thought we played well. We did some good things and were able to do a good job of hitting the ball against Sumner,” said Wolves Coach Jason Helmstetter. The Wolves are now 1-0 in district play and will play three games in four days this week due to the bad weather last week.
“We, like other teams just had to wait it out. We could not play or practice towards the end of last week and now we have to play three games in four days. I think our players are excited about the challenge and are eager to get back on the field.”
Loranger hosted Amite Monday Night then traveled to Bogalusa on Tuesday for a game against the Lumberjacks and will wrap up the week with a big game at home Thursday against the Albany Hornets in district action.
Coach Helmstetter said that he has his full compliment of pitchers ready to go this week and he was proud of the effort he got from Senior Bryce Himel last week in the Wolves win over Sumner. “Bryce had a great game for us. He picked up the win and pitched all six innings. Now we have to focus on the second week of district action.”
The Wolves rotation will likely put Shea Edwards, Taylor Abdalla and Freshman Brennan Catalano on the mound this week in the three games the Wolves will have to play. Coach Helmstetter is not nervous about being out of action for almost a week but is looking forward to seeing how his team responds.
“The weather threw us off a little and we are looking forward to getting back into a rhythm this week. These players know how to respond and it’s just about going out there and playing our best.
