By Lisa Soileaux
As they slid by Eunice 5-4 last week in their last district game of the 2013 season, the Wolves finished district play at 5-5 and will now travel to Brusly today (Thursday) who they will face in the first round of the 3-A state baseball playoffs.
Rayne completed their regular season schedule with a #22 state ranking, while Brusly will enter the playoffs at the No. 11 position.
“I think where we’re at in the bracket, we have a decent chance,” stated Rayne Head Coach Jason Bonin of the Wolves’ No. 22 placement in the 3-A state bracket.
“This young team reacts to who they are playing in the moment,” Bonin continued of his young team that numbers no seniors. “If we play a good team, we rise to that team. Hopefully, that will work out for us again this week.”
In the slim 5-4 win over Eunice last week, the Wolves used a sixth inning run to claim the win and a 5-5 district finish.
Wolf hurler Hunter Keely finished out his seven innings on the mound for the win turning in one strikeout while allowing only four hits behind a tough Rayne defense.
Keely was also 1-for-2 at the plate with a run and RBI.
Tyler LeJeune was 2-3 in the books and added a RBI.
Grant Abshire was also 2-3 at the plate paired with a double.
Ty Delahoussaye was 1-for-3 on the day with a run and 2 RBIs.
Brice Meche and Grant Menard both tallied a 1-for-3 during the game and a run and RBI each.
Blase Meche collected a hit (double) for an RBI, while Ivy Thibodeaux crossed the plate to complete the Rayne stats.
(Correction: Pitchers for the Church Point baseball game last week were Ty Delahoussaye and Hunter Keely. Delahoussaye pitched six innings recording five strikeouts and allowed 2 runs. Keely tagged one strikeout and allowed two runs in one inning of play.)
