Wolves fall to Pios in first round of playoffs

Notre Dame banged out 12 hits and took advantage of seven walks and three Rayne errors en route to a 12-0 five-inning victory over the homestanding Wolves.

The Pios improved to 13-6 overall and 3-0 in District 5-AAA play with the victory. The Wolves fell to 4-8 and 1-2.

Notre Dame got off to a quick start in the first inning when Luke Bourgeois drew a leadoff walk and Mitch Corzine reached base courtesy of Rayne’s first error of the contest. Ryan Leonards followed with a two-run triple to right field. He eventually scored on a grounder to shortstop by Bryant Gilbert that was misplayed.

Rayne got out of the inning when Matt Savoie grounded into a double play and Blaine Richard went down on strikes.

Notre Dame added to its lead in the third inning when Savoie doubled and scored on a single to right by Pete Petitjean. Richard, who walked, scored on yet another error to give the Pios a 5-0 advantage.

The Wolves threatened in the bottom of the third when they loaded the bases with one out on two hits and a walk. However, back-to-back grounders to the mound ended the inning with no runs crossing the plate.

Leonards and Savoie each had run-scoring singles in the fourth inning and Petitjean’s double to left center field drove in two more runs to push the lead to 9-0.

Notre Dame added its final three runs in the fifth inning, all with two outs.

Bourgeois walked to start the inning but Rayne cleared the bases on a double play off the bat of Corzine. Leonards then walked, Gilbert singled and Savoie drilled a two-run double to the alley in left center. Richard followed with a single to center to plate Savoie.

Austin Robichaux picked up the victory for the Pios, tossing a two-hit shutout. He walked two and struck out 10, including six straight in the final two innings.

Savoie and Gilbert paced the Pios’ offensive attack, each going 3-for-4. Savoie had two doubles and drove in three runs.
