Yellow Jackets outlast Gents

IOWA – There was no buzzer beater for the Crowley Gents this time.

The Gents, who beat Westlake on a last-second shot Tuesday, fell behind early and were never able to recover Friday in a 72-59 loss to Iowa on the Yellow Jackets’ home court.

The loss sent the Gents to 11-13 on the season and 2-4 in District 4-3A play.

“We dug ourselves a hole in the second quarter and that really was our downfall the rest of the game,” said CHS coach Derrick Boone, whose squad was outscored 24-11 in the second frame and trailed 39-27 at the half.

The Gents were able to chip away in the third quarter and they  cut the lead to 53-48. But missed opportunities in the frame proved costly in the end. The Gents made just three of their 11 free throw attempts in the frame and went 13-for-34 from the charity stripe overall on the night.

“We played solid defense and we hustled,” said Boone of his team’s play in the third quarter. “But we just didn’t take advantage of our opportunities at the free throw line. When you go 13-for-34 from the line, you can’t expect to win ballgames.”

But even with the missed opportunities at the stripe, the Gents were still within striking distance.

Andre Mills hit a floater in the lane early in the third quarter and after a steal, Bryson Domino added a layup to get the Gents within four (56-52) with just over six minutes remaining.

That, however, was as close as the Gents would get.

Iowa scored the next seven points and went on a 16-7 run in the final four minutes to seal the victory.

“The loss is tough, but one good thing was that this was the hardest I’ve seen my guys fight,” said Boone, whose squad was whistled for countless fouls late in the game. “We fought though adversity when the calls weren’t going our way and we gave ourselves a chance.

“We’d get close and then the whistle would blow and kind of take the air out of us a little bit. But they kept a positive attitude and they fought through it, we just couldn’t get over that hump.”

Marcus Williams and Damon Malbrough led the Gents with 17 and 16 points, respectively.  Danny Malbrough followed with 12 points and Jesse Harmon added five. Mills scored five points, Domino had three and Charles Onezine had two.

Aaron Guillory paced the Yellow Jackets with 18 points and Taray Martin had 16. Bryan Marks and Daquain Matthews each hit double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Gents will play host to South Beauregard on Tuesday.
