Zachary Fire/Rescue responds to mysterious bridge fire
Zachary Fire/Rescue units responded to a call from a passing motorist last Thursday, April 2, at approximately 10:45 a.m., who claimed that a bridge on Highway 19 was on fire.
As units arrived on the scene of the fire in the 8500 block of Highway 19, it was discovered that one of the creosote posts holding up part of the guardrail of a bridge on Plank Road was the cause of the fire.
Zachary Fire Chief Boyce Smith Jr. and several firefighters quickly extinguished the small blaze and proceeded to assess the area for damage and the cause of the fire.
“We checked underneath the bridge to see if there was anyone down there who perhaps knowingly or unknowlingly started the fire or who possibly had any knowledge of its origin,” said Smith. “We didn’t find anyone other than the motorist who reported the fire.”
There was no significant damage to the bridge reported and no injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, Smith said. Zachary Police also responded to the scene to manage traffic until the small fire was extinguished.
