James Edward Landry

Mr. James Edward Landry, 76, was a resident of Crowley and departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette.
James was born on June 13, 1942, in Jennings, to the late Hellen Bossette and Terrence Landry. James served in the United States Navy from 1961 - 1965 and received and honorable discharge. He later worked as a mortician in Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio, and later worked as a pipe cutter with Capital Manufacturing Company.
He also helped out at the soup kitchen for many years.
James was a faithful member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Crowley, pastored by Father Godwin Imoru.
James was awarded the Martin Luther King Award, and was on the board for A.A. He was a member of a number of associations: Knights of Peter Clavier, Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th Degree Grand Knight, St. Joseph Society, a member of the Cursillo Movement, and a member of Legion of Mary. He also walked several times with the Pentecostal Movement.
James leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Mary Annette Landry; niece, Towanda K. Landry; nephew, Donovan (Shellie) Landry; great-nieces, Jacquie Landry, Tarkesta Landry, Olivia Landry and Kenisha Landry; great-nephews, Ronnell Jones and O’Bryan Landry; great-great-nieces, Mikayla Landry, Yasmine Landry, and Emonie Lamon; great-great-nephews, Elijah Landry, Kavieon Landry, Kwamaine Smith-Logan, Ky’Ryll Smith-Logan and Maurice Lamon; four brothers-in-law, Felton Cormier, Lester (Hannah) Cormier, Kevin (Paula) Cormier, and Blaine Cormier; five sisters-in-laws; Shirley Cormier, Catherine Smith, Theresa (Lawrence) Thibodeaux, Brenda (Paul) Bob, and Susan Swanagan.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Terence Landry Sr. and Hellen Bossette-Landry; brother, Terrence Landry Jr; and sister, Anna Kirk.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 901 E. Elm St., Crowley.
Father Jason Vidrine officiated.
Visitation was in the church at 9:30 a.m. A Rosary was recited at 10 a.m. in the church.
Interment was in the South Crowley Cemetery under the direction of Semien-Lewis Mortuary, LLC.

Joseph Landry Jr.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. at Greater Mt. Zion (Ambassador Ministries) Church for Joseph Landry Jr., 75, who passed away Jan. 2, 2019, at his home surrounded by family and friends.
Services were conducted by Rev. Keith Matthews.
Interment was at South Crowley Cemetery.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sara Ann Martin Landry; two sons, Kenneth Landry (Derinda) of Jennings, and Kirk Landry ( Stephanie) of Crowley; four sisters, Joannie Dugar of Crowley, Audrey Garrick (Hillman) of Crowley, Carol Conley and Cynthia Robinson of Crowley; three special friends, Daniel Marks, Emily Zenon and Caprice Ledet, whom he loved dearly; as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Special thanks to Dr. Karrie Kilgore, Hospice of Acadiana, CNA’s Jennifer and Scarlet, RN Jamie and Pastor Langley.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Bates Landry; and his father, Joseph Landry Sr.; sister, Linda Landry; brothers, Donald Ray Miller and Harold Robinson.
Visitation was held on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Greater Mt. Zion (Ambassador Ministries) Church from 8 a.m. until time of services.

Linda Ann Istre

RAYNE - A Mass of Christian Burial for Linda Ann Istre, 69, will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 14, 2019, at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rayne. Father Christopher Cambre, Associate Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, will serve as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery No. 2 Mausoleum, Rayne.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 13, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., with a rosary being recited at 6 p.m. in Gossen Funeral Home, Rayne. Visitation will continue on Monday, Jan. 14, from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home.

Ms. Istre passed away on Saturday, Jan. 12, in a Lafayette hospital.

Survivors include her spouse, Gregory LaFosse of Rayne; son, Ryan Istre of Houston; brothers, Ernest Istre and wife Liz of Llano, Texas, John Istre Sr. and wife Nell of Crowley, Ervis Istre of Rayne, and Lawrence Istre and wife Vicky of Crowley; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding Ms. Istre in death were her parents, Celestin Istre and Beatrice Dupont Istre, and brother, Stephen Istre.

Property damage results from New Year’s Eve gunshots

Falling bullets at two locations

RAYNE - Not one, but two locations within the city limits of Rayne, were targeted by falling bullets just after midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Officers with the Rayne Police were called to Frog City Travel Plaza and Casino following a report of damage received due to falling bullets during midnight celebrations.
One employee stated that at midnight, while counting her cash drawer, a bullet penetrated the ceiling of the business causing parts of the ceiling to fall to the floor.
Another employee was standing outside under the awning when she heard gunshots. At that point, she returned back inside the establishment; at which time, they discovered the damage.
Following pictures taken of the damage and getting statements from the witnesses, a bullet was located on the countertop behind the front counter.
A second call was received by the Rayne Police minutes after midnight for an incident at 815 Bella Ave.
The homeowner advised the officer of a bullet that penetrated her carport wall during the midnight celebratons.
Following an on-site investigation, officers were able to recover a .45 caliber round from a metal awning located next to the residence.
“We warn citizens every year of something like this happening,” stated Rayne Police Chief Carroll Selly concerning the shooting of guns during New Year’s Eve celebrations. “Not only is it dangerous, but it’s a voilation of the law.
“In the past, people have been injured from this here,” Stelly continued. “I guess we’ve been lucky that no one has been killed.”
Information is being collected and the two incidents are still being investigated.

Tickets available for upcoming 2019 Rayne Grand Court Mardi Gras Ball

RAYNE - Tickets are available for the eighth annual Rayne Grand Court Mardi Gras Ball. Tickets are $50 per person and are available through court members and also available at the Rayne Chamber Office. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
The ball is sponsored by the Rayne Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture and will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, in the Rayne Civic Center.
The ball will be transformed into a gala circus theme, “Under The Big Top!” Doors will open at 6 p.m. and presentations will begin at 7 p.m.
His Majesty King Dwayne Derise and Her Majesty Queen Jamie Bouy, along with their royal court including Ava Arceneaux, Anna-Claire Menard, Dani Grace Meche, April Hanks, Kourtney Credeur, Lexi Miller, Tori Nero, Beau Bergeron, Chad Terro, Jessica Houston, Ben Leonards, Jessica Leonards, Laurie Suire, Remi Winchester and Simone Adams will be presented in regal and costumed attire for the circus/carnival theme.
Refreshments will be sold. No ice chests are allowed.
Formal/semi-formal attire is required. Gentleman may wear suits and a tie, and ladies may wear floor-length gowns or cocktail dresses. NO JEANS will be permitted.

Rayne Planning, Zoning Commission approves variance, votes on chair

RAYNE - A brief meeting was held Monday, Jan. 7, by the Rayne Planning Commission at City Hall.
In attendance for the meeting were Planning Commission members Wayne Wyatt, Ron Sonnier, Jerry Bergeron and Chairman Lee Seilhan.
Planning Commission member Sanders Senegal was not in attendance.
The main subject on the agenda for the meeting was the Commission to consider a requested for a variance from Ali LeLeux for the placement of a beauty salon and boutique at 309 East Louisiana Ave., which is presently zoned at R-1.
Following a brief discussion by the Planning Commission as it was noted similar businesses have occupied the location until recently, a motion was made by Sonnier to approve the request.
Voting in accordance with the motion were Sonnier, Bergeron and Wyatt.
The Commission was also asked to consider the renewal of Lee Seilhan to continue to serve as chairman of the Rayne Planning and Zoning Committee for the 2019 calendar year.

Seilhan noted the Commission’s report would be forwarded to the City Council for the Jan. 14 meeting.
With no additional business to be brought forth, the meeting was adjourned.

Post 77 updates by-laws updates, plan Legion’s 100th anniversary

RAYNE - An update was given for a number of events and legion projects during the December meeting of Arceneaux Post 77, American Legion, held at the Legion Home.
With the updates and changes of the Constitution By-Laws complete and approved by the judge advocate and membership, they will be submitted to the State Department.
As noted by Commander David Simon, the main updates and changes were attributed to the Auxiliary Unit, Sons of the Legion and committees.
Plans continued to be discussed and other ideas suggested for the 100th anniversary celebration of the American Legion planned on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the local Legion Home. The actual birthday of the American Legion is March 15, 1919.
Some of the plans discussed for the local celebration will include musical entertainment, programs and activities for the entire family for not only legionnaires to enjoy, but the general public.
“This is the observance of the 100th birthday of the U.S. American Legion,” stated Post 77 Commander David Simon. “We are working to get the entire community involved and learn what the American Legion is all about.”
Simon also noted the 100th birthday of the local American Legion of Post 77 will be observed two years later in 2021.
The commander announced the arrival of paperwork he received for the many Legion programs hosted by Post 77 (Boys State, Oratorical Contest and awards for the annual Law Enforcement Officer, Fireman and Citizen of the Year, Teacher of the Year) that will be re-established this term. The forms will be distributed by Chairman John Quebodeaux to the respective representatives so winners can be named and awards ordered.
Simon reported of the recent weekend musical entertainment and events held at the Legion Home, in addition to a number of events planned in the coming weeks.
Following the maintenance report including projects and repairs recently completed at the Legion Home, Simon presented sick call of Legion Home manager Keith Fontenot.
The membership report for the new membership year of 120 paid up dues was reported by Chairman Ray Olinger.
A $400 donation was recently received by Post 77, the lone donation received by the legion.
Chairman Robert Comeaux gave a brief report of the recently completely Woodmen of the World donation drive held for veterans who reside at the War Veterans Home in Jennings. He thanked everyone for their donations and assistance with the program and stated three vehicles were needed to transport the numerous donations made for the veterans.
Simon thanks all legionnaires and volunteers who assisted with the annual 7th District Christmas Party held at the War Veterans Home in Jennings. He also noted Post 77 and Unit 77 made their usual cash and fruit donations.
The commander also reminded everyone that food and beverages are still available for purchase with an expanding menu at the Legion Home during normal bar hours. Call 334-4774 to place your pick-up orders.
Also continuing at the Legion Home is Cadillac and Domino games between 4 p.m. until closing every Thursday.
“Thirsty Thursday” drink specials will also be available from 7 p.m. till. All domestic beers are $1.50 a bottle.
A reminder was also given to mark calendars for the New Year’s Eve Party to be held at the local Legion Home. In addition to legionnaires, the general public was invited to attend and usher in the new year.
With no further business to come before the Post, the meeting was adjourned and a meal was served by the Legion cooks.
