Lady Pios log victories in Acadiana tournament

LAFAYETTE - After falling Friday for just the third time this season, the Notre Dame Lady Pios reeled off back-to-back victories on Saturday during the Acadiana Tournament to improve to 10-3 on the season.
Friday’s 3-1 loss was at the hands of Catholic Pointe Coupee, the state runner-up in Division IV last season, in a game where offense was sparse for both teams.
The Lady Pios plated their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Lillian Guidry singled and scored on an error to give Notre Dame a 1-0 advantage.
Catholic Pointe Coupee answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs.
A leadoff double turned into the tying run two batters later on an RBI single. Following a walk, a two-run double put the Lady Hornets up for good.
The Lady Pios got a one-out single from Keleigh Spell in the top of the seventh inning and Valerie Brown was hit by a pitch with two outs.
But a ground out to third base one batter later ended the game.
Spell had two hits for the Lady Pios and Malayna Daigle added a double. Brown and Guidry had the only other hits, both singles.
In Saturday’s opening game, the Lady Pios cruised past Dunham, 15-2, and then knocked off Covington, 2-0, to close out tournament play.
Ava Yates picked up the victory in the circle against Dunham after allowing two runs, neither earned, on one hit. She walked six, hit two and struck out three in five innings.
The Lady Pios belted out 15 hits in the victory with Daigle going 4-for-4 with four RBI. Spell added three hits and Aly Teare had two hits, including a double, and one RBI.
Brown followed with a home run and three RBI, Guidry doubled and drove in two runs, Lydia Brown also had a double and an RBI and Emily Abshire logged a single and an RBI.
In addition, Yates had a double and Anna Francis recorded a single in a pinch-hit appearance.
Madeline Johnson was the winning pitcher in the final game of the day against Covington. She allowed three hits and three walks while striking out four.
The Lady Pios scored a run in the first inning when Spell reached on an infield hit and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Spell also accounted for the final run when she logged a one-out single in the third inning, stole second base and scored on a single to right field by Daigle..
Spell had two hits, Daige had one hit and an RBI and Valerie Brown had a single.
The Lady Pios open District 5-2A play Thursday with a road contest at Lake Arthur.
