Scenes from The Gallery: Robert Baxter’s Sept. 6 gala opening

Guests at the gala listen intently as Baxter speaks about his work and describes the painting he has completed in memory of the late Imogene Lacour.

Visitors at the Crowley Art Association’s Saturday, Sept. 6, gala opening for Robert Baxter’s current show, “Works,” enjoyed good art, good food and good company.

Crowley’s new history book and the woman behind it

A contemporary Ann Mire, in a trademark Hawaiian shirt, sits with her new book in front of one of her favorite historical spots in Crowley - the monument erected in Levy Park in memory of W.W. and C.C. Duson. Although the monument was erected in honor of the city’s 50th birthday, which occurred on Jan. 4, 1887, it was not dedicated until Oct. 5, 1937. The date coincided with the birthday of W.W. Duson and provided the perfect springboard for an annual harvest celebration - Crowley’s Rice Festival.

It’s unclear whether Ann Mire adopted Crowley or Crowley adopted Ann Mire, but either way it has been a beautiful relationship.
