Governor John Bel Edwards said the Morganza Spillway will more than likely be opened as heavy rainfall is falling in the Midwest and draining down through the Mississippi River. The river level at Morganza is currently 58 feet, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said if the level rises to 59.5 feet, they will recommend opening up the flood control structure. Edwards said the decision will be made on May 28, with an opening date set for June 2. If opened, this would be the third time in history.
