CROWLEY – As the dozens of flags marking the graves of deceased American veterans flapped in wind, members of the various components of the American Legion were joined by city officials, veterans and families of veterans for a Memorial Day program Monday at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Acadia Post 15 Commander Wayne Dommert conducted the program.
“We are deeply honored to be able to pay homage to our dearly departed comrades and we sincerely say, ‘May their souls rest in peace.’
“This day is sacred with the almost visible presence of those who have gone before us,” Dommert continued. “We honor the memory of those who gave their lives in the service of our country, and of those others who have dropped their burdens by the wayside of life and gone to their eternal rest.”
Following prayer, the flag on the flagpole at the cemetery was lowered, then raised to half-staff by Richard “Dickie” Latiolais and Councilmen Clint Cradeur and Brad Core. A wreath was then placed in front of the Veterans’ Memorial by Commander Dommert and wife Geraldine, president of Auxiliary Unit 15.
Bobby Frazier, Sons of the Legion, sounded ‘Taps” to conclude the program.
The noon program was hosted by American Legion Post 15, Auxiliary Unit 15, Sons of the Legion and the American Legion Riders.
