Committee refuses to discuss RHS weight room

CROWLEY - A motion to build a new weight room at Rayne High School died for lack of a second during School Board committee meetings here Monday.
Steve Jones, Rayne-area representative, offered a motion to consider building a new facility at RHS, but no one on the committee would second it.
Noting that, according to Robert’s Rules of Order the matter could not even be discussed without a second, Jones was visibly distraught with fellow committee members.
“You’re not even going to give me a chance to discuss it?” he asked.
But, there being no response, the Budget and Finance Committee meeting was adjourned with no action.
According to records from the Acadia Parish Assessor’s Office, there is currently no construction or maintenance millage being levied for the Rayne School District.
Earlier during the committee, members considered:
• 2019-2020 Mid-Year General Fund Budget Revisions.
Justin Carrier, chief financial officer, explained that, although the system was projected to end the year in a deficit, with some cuts to the budget and an increase in tax revenue the APSB should finish the year with a balanced budget — including a small surplus — providing there are no unexpected major expenses.
• Bids received for Cat 2 eRate funding.
Superintendent Scott Richard explained that this deals with the Internet in schools. The school board is expected to pay about 15 percent of the projected cost of the upgrades.
The full board will consider approval at the next regular session meeting.
An update on DS Bus South was also presented to the committee in which a representative explained the new training program, classroom time and driving time. The next safety meeting topic, establishing a safety culture, was mentioned to the board.
The Personnel, Insurance and Curriculum Committee received an update on the Head Start Program from Richard, who reported that the program has normal operations at this time and is working on recruiting students for the 2020-2021 school year.
In addition the three buses that a special grant payed for should be delivered soon.
The committee also approved recommendations that the full board:
• Approve a travel request from Iota High School Dance Team to perform at Walt Disney World from Dec. 13-19.
The dance team will participate in fund-raisers to pay for their travels.
• Approve a travel request from Morse Elementary School grades 6 and 7 to visit NASA Space Center in Houston on Wednesday May 6.
About 47 students will be on the trip.
