2019-2020 Teachers of the Year honored during luncheon

RAYNE - “Teachers of the Year” at all Acadia Parish schools were honored during the annual Acadia Parish School Board Teacher of the Year Luncheon held Thursday, Nov. 7, at Chef Roy’s Frog City Café here.
Superintendent of Schools Scott Richard welcomed the honorees and special guests, with Bryan Alleman serving as master of ceremonies.
The invocation was given by Milton Simar, with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Ike Richard.
Special entertainment was provided by the Talented Music Program of Acadia Parish students under the direction of James Richard.
In addition to honoring each school honoree, the Acadia Parish honorees were also acknowledged, including:
• Elementary - Catherine Gattle of Mermentau Elementary
• Middle School - Brenda Freeman of Armstrong MIddle School
• High School - Kalita Watson of Crowley High School
Katie Templet of the Lafayette Federal Schools’ Credit Union made the award presentations.

Rayne Frog Festival Parade Grand Marshal nominees being accepted

The Rayne Frog Festival committee is now accepting nominations for the 2020 Frog Festival Parade Grand Marshal.
“If anyone knows of a deserving person for this award, submit a brief letter stating why this person should receive such an honor”, said Jeremy Lavergne, Frog festival chairman.
Entries should be mailed to Rayne Frog Festival, 107 Oak Street, Rayne, LA 70578 or brought to the Rayne Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture office. Deadline to enter is Monday, February 3, 2020.
The nominee should be originally from Rayne or someone from another city who has helped Rayne grow or promoted Rayne in one way or another.
Politicians on a city, parish, state and national level should be excluded unless Rayne has especially benefited from their actions. Also excluded will be elected officials or someone seeking office during an election year.
The nominee should be able to claim to have done any of the following:
Been outstanding in the field of business and industry by promoting new business and industry in Rayne
Promoted Rayne and the Frog Festival over the years
Contributed to the young people of Rayne through organizations and/or athletic work
Gained regional or national recognition by one means or another
Been recognized as having done outstanding work through or for civic organizations
Made monetary contributions to Rayne where citizens, young or old have benefited
Been an outstanding citizen of Rayne and has unselfishly given up time to contribute toward the betterment of the community.
The city of Rayne has many outstanding citizens who may qualify for this honor, so please send in your nomination before the Monday, Feb. 3, deadline.

Rayne Frog Festival Poster Contest begins

The Rayne Frog Festival committee of the Rayne Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture announces it will hold a contest for the design of the official poster to commemorate the 2020 Rayne Frog Festival in the City of Rayne.
Prizes will be awarded as follows: 1st place - $100 and 2 weekend festival passes, and a festival t-shirt.
All posters must be submitted on poster board or art board sized 18” x 24” and in portrait orientation. The design must reflect the celebration of the Frog Festival and include the following information:

Frog Capital of the World
May 6-9, 2020
Rayne, Louisiana
Frog Festival events such as Frog Leg Cooking Contest, dance contest, frog leg etiquette eating contest, diaper derby, arts & crafts show, frog racing and jumping contest, frog derby, carnival and festival royalty may be used in the poster design.
All posters must be original artwork. Computer enhanced original work will be allowed. Entrant’s name, address and phone humbler must appear on the back of the poster. All entries must be camera ready.
Winner of the past year contest will not be eligible to submit an entry for one year.
Entries are to be submitted to the Rayne Chamber of Commerce office located at 107 Oak Street, Rayne, LA. The deadline for entry is February 7, 2020. Judging will take place by the Rayne Frog Festival committee at their February committee meeting.
The winner has within two weeks to sign posters after they are received at the Rayne Chamber of Commerce.
All poster entries become the property of the Rayne Chamber of Commerce/Rayne Frog Festival. The winning poster design and all rights to the design’s use shall become the property of the Rayne Chamber of Commerce/Rayne Frog festival.

‘Breakfast With Santa’ planned Dec. 14 at Rayne Civic Center

Limited tickets offered for annual event

As Christmas nears and holiday programs begin, the third annual “Breakfast With Santa” will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Rayne Civic Center.
The City of Rayne, Ronald Stutes and committee members with the social media group Rayne Remembered have joined forces once again to provide this special holiday event for the children of Rayne.
The event will be free for children from throughout the community; however, due to limited space, only 300 tickets will be available, according to Mayor Charles “Chuck” Robichaux.
The children-only breakfast will be served at 9 a.m. at the Civic Center with events concluding at noon.
After breakfast, youngsters can have fun by making an ornament, listen to Christmas stories, play a variety of games and make reindeer food.
Little ones can also write a letter to Santa or play in the “snow” while making memories to last a lifetime.
Tickets are available at City Hall on a first come, first serve basis. Only five children tickets per family will be dispensed.

‘Movie in the Park’, Santa at Rayne Depot

Free event offered to community

The historic Rayne Depot will be the setting on Sunday, Dec. 1, for “Movie in the Park” as announced by co-sponsors including City of Rayne, Rayne Remembered social media group and Don Shetler.
Surrounded by spectacular Christmas decor, the holiday fun will begin at 5 p.m. when fans, young and old, will visit with Santa Claus, including photos and letters to the man in red.
Following the 5-6 p.m. visits with Santa, “The Polar Express” will be shown for all to enjoy. Come dressed in pajamas, bring a blanket and chair, and enjoy a fun night of the old-fashioned holidays. (Please dress appropriately for the weather.)
Admission is free, no tickets needed, and refreshments will be provided by Don Shetler and their employees.
In addition, the season of giving will also be felt as three boxes will be set up at the Depot for the Polar Express viewing. Each will be provided for a special cause: (1) food donations for food bank; (2) coats for kids; and (3) toys for the needy.
While enjoying the evening of Christmas joy, please help someone who needs assistance for the holidays.
In case of inclement weather, an alternate location is being sought.

Prepare to attend Rayne Holiday Market, ‘Shop Small Saturday’

RAYNE - The Rayne Chamber of Commerce and the City of Rayne have joined forces to host the inagural Rayne Holiday Market on Saturday, Nov. 30, better know as “Shop Small Saturday.”
Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. customers can visit with participating vendors at the Rayne Depot for a variety of gifts and special selections, just in time for Christmas.
Children can take selfies with Santa Clause, while mom and dad shop for Christmas and sample deliciously prepared foods.
Throughout the city, Rayne merchants will be offering specials and discounts. You can find a map of participating Rayne businesses along with their specials, discounts, and holiday hours in the Rayne Acadian-Tribune on the Thursday, Nov. 21st edtion.
