Wolves claim 19-8 road win at Abbeville

ABBEVILLE - The Rayne High Wolves were the first to light up the score board Friday evening when they traveled to Abbeville where they met the Wildcats and claim a 19-8 win.
The win over Abbeville gives the Wolves a 1-1 season tally, thus far.
“I really feel good for our kids to pull out this win tonight,” stated Rayne High Head Coach Kaine Guidry as he collects his first win as a head coach.
“It wasn’t a pretty win, but it was a win,” Guidry continued. “I’ll take an ugly win over a pretty loss anyday. I’m glad our guys could bounce back from last week -- that was a rough loss.”
The Wolves fell to Welsh last week in the final two minutes of play in their season opener.
“Again, I’m proud of our guys,” Guidry noted. “They play hard and never give up, no matter the situation, if we’re ahead or behind. You like that as a coach.
“A constant for us this year is our defense. They are always on the move and get the job done.
The Rayne defense limited the Wildcats to 193 total offensive yards, limiting the Abbeville backfield to only 27 rushing yards and making key stops the red zone. The majority of the Wildcats’ offensive yards came in the air with 11 completions for 166 yards.
Leading the Rayne defense were Ron Roberts with 6 tackles, a quarterback sack and 3 tackles for a loss. Miles Doucet recorded five tackles, 3 solos, 3 assists and a quarterback sack, while Tony Cormier and Jamarcus Monroe each tallied 4 tackles, 3 assists, and a tackle for a loss.
Completing the Rayne defenders making a difference for the win were Will Arceneaux, Brandon Aguillard, Miguel DelValle, Peyton Francis, Deuce Comeaux, Sean Dorsett, Bleyton Francis, Griffin Champagne and Jamarcus Richard.
“Our offense is where we expected to have a little trouble with all the rookies we have. They are coming around but are still having some trouble getting our running game going.
“Tonight, we just couldn’t get things going like we wanted to. We moved the ball a bit, but Abbeville called a good defensive game. We came out ready for a play, they would have a different defensive look. They played a good defensive game -- I have to give them that.
The Wolves spread their scoring to a touchdown in each of the first third quarters and limited Abbeville to a lone score in the second quarter of play.
“I wish we could have made a couple more plays, but we didn’t hit our seams and they read us well. They have a good defense.
“We also had some new guys on the line due to some of our guys cramping tonight, so we had a few issues. But they came through most of the time.”
The Wolves were limited to 145 total offensive yards on the night with only 74 yards on the ground.
They were led by Jamarcus Monroe with 44 yards on 13 carries with a TD, Ron Charles had 36 yards on 11 carries and Reid Dupont had a short 3-yard carry.
Junior quarterback Collin LaCombe was able to connect with seven receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown. He also recorded a quarterback sneak behind his line for a score from one yard out.
Rayne receivers on the evening were Jamarcus Monroe with a 31-yard reception, Reid Dupont recorded two catches for 19 yards, Baylon Leon nabbed a 7-yarder and Ron Charles turned in 16 yards and a TD catch.
Perhaps the most noticeable stat on the evening came in the column of penalties, 31 to be exact. Rayne was docked for 140 yards on 17 flags, while Abbeville saw 14 flags fly for 115 yards.
“That really put a damper on the game,” Guidry commented as he collected his first sideline referee discussion of his early head coaching career.
“There were many questionable calls on both sidelines, not just for us. You never want penalties to decide or halt a game, but that was basically the situation tonight.
“Overall, our guys showed some grit tonight and pulled out a tough win. Our defense really showed up, our special teams did a great job and our offense is improving with every game they play. We’ll see what next week brings.”
Following Rayne High’s upcoming week-long Homecoming celebration, the Wolves will host Westlake Friday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. with all alumni invited to attend the Homecoming football game at Wolf Stadium.
