Frog Derby - A Rayne tradition continues

RAYNE - Always a crowd pleaser, the annual Rayne Lions Club Frog Derby will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, under the Pavilion on Stag I during the 2019 Annual Rayne Frog Festival.
Interviews for the contest were held Saturday, May 4, at The Green Room with 10 young ladies participating.
The 10 contestants for this year’s event are:
Jenyth Dale Allen, 14-year-old daughter of Todd and Allyson Allen;
Morgan Alyse Boudreaux, 15-year-old daughter of Jamie Molbert Bouy and Eric Boudreaux;
Kora Boullion, 14-year-old daughter of Tabatha LeBlanc and Josh Boullion;
Asiah Dupont, 15-year-old daughter of John Dupont and Cherie Castille;
Madison Claire Leger, 15-year-old daughter of Tara Richard and Brent Leger;
Myra Rose LeJeune, 15-year-old daughter of Tyler and Rachel Guidry;
Kirsten Navarre, 15-year-old daughter of Gabrielle Navarre;
Madison Michelle Richard, 15-year-old daughter of Ashley and Adrian Brasseaux;
Ava Therese Thibodeaux, 16-year-old daughter of Annette and Stacey Thibodeaux; and
Hayley Young, 16-year-old daughter of Natalie Young.
The Frog Derby began in 1946 as part of Crowley's International Rice Festival and moved home to Rayne when the Frog Festival began here in 1973.
The event features a “best dressed frog” competition in which each jockey dresses her frog in a unique, handmade costume. The beautiful jockeys also dress in pastel-colored shorts with suspenders, coordinating checkered blouses and matching caps to jump their frogs in competition. The longest jump is also awarded.
Concluding the colorful event is the crowning of the Frog Derby and Frog Jockey queens.

Rayne High football under new direction

Spring Game planned May 15 at Rayne High

Under the direction of a new head coach, Kaine Guidry, the Rayne High football team began spring drills Monday, April 29, and are now gearing up for the 2019 Spring Game on Wednesday, May 15, at Rayne High Stadium. The Wolves will host St. Louis during a 5:30 p.m. contest. At right, Guidry instructs the quarterbacks and backfield, while the coaching staff oversees line positions on both sides. Rayne Garden Club Flower Show winners

RAYNE - The Rayne Garden Club hosted its 2019 Annual Flower Show, “Roses, Irises, Daisies, Oh My!,” on Friday, May 3, at The Green Room of the Civic Center Complex. All floral designs displayed multiple blooms and colors in keeping with the theme.
Chairperson Lisa Soileaux and Rayne Garden Club members welcomed guests during the free public viewing and afternoon tea between the hours of 3-6 p.m. at the Green Room where floral designs and horticulture entries where on display.
Designs
Winners in their categories who followed the “Roses, Irises, Daisies, Oh My!” theme noted in floral designs, included the following:
Designer’s Choice Overall Award: Josette Habetz.
Creative Line Design: 1st place Jeanette Daigle, 2nd place Judy Guidry, 3rd place Fran Bihm, honorable mention Julia Breaux.
Creative Line Mass Design: 1st place Chris Simpson, 2nd place Desiree Casey, 3rd place Lisa Soileaux, honorable mention Martha Pierret.
Traditional Mass Design: 1st place Josette Habetz, 2nd place Sepha Guidry, 3rd place Dianne Sonnier, honorable mention Margaret Comeaux.
Horticulture
Overall horticultural winners in Division II of the entire flower show were:
Award of Horticultural Excellence (Best Overall entry) - Joyce Trahan.
Arboreal Award - Margaret Comeaux.
Award of Merit in Section A - Joyce Trahan.
Award of Merit in Section B - Margaret Comeaux.
Award of Merit in Section E - Lisa Soileaux.
Award of Merit in Section F - Joyce Trahan.
Collectors Showcase Award - Julia Breaux.

Richard Lee Hayes

INDIAN BAYOU - Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 1:00 pm at Ebenezer Church of the Nazarene in Ebenezer for Richard Lee Hayes, 79, who died Tuesday, May 7, at Lafayette General Medical Center Hospital in Lafayette.

Interment will be in the Indian Bayou Methodist Cemetery in Indian Bayou.

Pastor Barry Stevens with Ebenezer Church of the Nazarene will conduct the funeral services.

Richard Lee Hayes was born on March 1, 1940 in Rayne, to Reginald Arthur Hayes and Grace McCall Hayes of Indian Bayou. He was raised in Indian Bayou and graduated from Indian Bayou High School in 1958, and worked in the flooring industry for over 45 years. As a young man he sanded floors with his father and brother, In the 1970's he was an Assistant Manager of United Tile Company. He later co-owned and operated Carpet-N-Floors in Lafayette and co-owned and operated Hollier Floor Covering of Jennings. He enjoyed playing dominos and cards with his friends and buddies for many years.

Survivors include wife, Therese Melancon Hayes, son, Ricky Hayes and spouse Mary, two daughters, Keene Hayes, Denise Hayes Barzare and spouse Daniel, three grandchildren, Richie Hayes, Shantel Hayes, Carrie Grace Romero, two great grandchildren, Grayson Roy, Logan Taylor, two step daughters, Tammy Allen and spouse David, Tonya Bourque, three step grandchildren, Emily Menard, Joseph Bourque, Mary Bourque, step great grandchild, Charlotte Menard, four step children, Michelle Dore', Kelly Dore', Michael Dore', Kenny Dore', brother, George Hayes, sister, Dorothy Cormier and spouse Huey, numerous nieces and nephews, mother of his children, Carolyn Allmond and spouse Billy, his best pal and beloved puppy, Lucky.

He was preceded in death by father, Reginald Arthur Hayes, mother, Grace McCall Hayes, sister, Myra Hollier, sister, Betty Butaud, wife, Wanda Hayes, maternal grandparents, Jessie and Savanah McCall, paternal grandparents, Offord and Minnie Hayes.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Hayes, Richie Hayes, Danny Barzare, Mark Hollier, Mike Hayes, Shane Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Rocky Hollier, Logan Taylor, Carrie Grace Romero, Garyson Roy

The family requests that visitation be observed in Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne on Friday, May 10, from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm and the family requests that visitation be observed at Ebenezer Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, May 11, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Our heartfelt thanks to all of the employees, staff, nurses, and doctors at St. Agnes Healthcare & Rehabilitation in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana for all of your kindness, compassion, love and dedication to our father in the last months and days of his life. Donna Marie Gueno Richard

RAYNE - A Mass of Christian Burial for Donna Marie Gueno Richard, age 76, will be celebrated on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 11:30 AM in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rayne. Father Christopher Cambre, Associate Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, will serve as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery No. 2, Rayne.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2019 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM in Gossen Funeral Home, Rayne, with a rosary being recited at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Friday from 8:00 AM until 11:00 AM in the funeral home.

Donna passed away on May 6, 2019 from complications related to open heart surgery. She was born on November 20, 1942 in Orange, TX. Donna graduated from St. Joseph High School in Rayne, and later attended University of Louisiana before graduating from Spencer Business College. She was a resident of Slidell, LA for many years.

Donna was universally known by her family and friends as a kind, giving, and religious woman who always put others' needs before her own. She enjoyed gardening, spoiling her grandchildren, and preparing exceptional and elaborate holiday meals. Donna will be sorely missed by her family, and by all who had the pleasure to know her.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, W. Robert "Bob" Richard of Slidell; children, Kurt Richard and wife, Shelly of Mobile, AL, Deborah Richard Bauer and husband, Earnie of Madisonville, and Karen Richard Burns and husband, Tim of Mandeville; grandchildren, Ryan Richard, Maggie Richard, Vance Burns, Jude Bauer, and Julia Bauer; and brother, Jeffery Gueno of Kaplan.

Preceding Donna in death were her parents, Donald Joseph Gueno, Sr. and Frances Besse Gueno; and brothers, Donald Joseph Gueno, Jr. and Clifton Leon Gueno.

Serving as pallbearers are Kurt Richard, Ryan Richard, Jeffery Gueno, Chad Broussard, Ernie Bauer, and Tim Burns.

Virginia Trahan Amy

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 10, at the Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel in Crowley for Virginia Trahan Amy, 75, who died Monday, May 6, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Rev. Mark Broussard, chaplain of Lamm Hospice, will officiate for the services.
The family is requesting visiting hours be held Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A rosary will be recited 12:30 p.m.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Mausoleum.
Mrs. Amy is survived by her husband of 59 years, Daniel Amy of Ebenezer; five daughters, Lisa Istre of Lyons Point, Amanda Amy and husband Noah Cormier of Crowley, Laci Ebers and husband Joey of Eunice, Amber Amy of Jennings, and April Amy of Eunice; six sons, Wallace Daniel Amy and wife Connie of Crowley, Shawn Allen Amy and wife Angie of Tifton, Georgia, Christopher Neal Amy of Ebenezer, Brian Scott Amy of Crowley, Otis Charles Amy and wife Amy of Kaplan, and James Curtis Amy and wife Jessica of Wichita Falls, Texas; three sisters, Shirlene Sittig of DeQuincy, Lena Polumbo and Theresa Stutes both of Crowley; four brothers, Lester Trahan of Douglasville, Georgia, Hollands Trahan of Crowley, Lionel Trahan of Crowley and Earl Trahan of Crowley; one son-in-law, Dexter Guidry; 25 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by one daughter, Elia “Angie” Guidry; her father, Lessar Trahan; her mother, Edith Hoffpauir Sarver, one sister, Lois Bertand; two brothers, Lovelace and Michael Trahan; and two granddaughters, Angelica Quinn and Danielle Faith Guidry.
Pallbearers will be Dexter P. Guidry II, Daniel Seth Guidry, David Dane Guidry, Michael Shea Istre, Hunter Amy and Hayden Amy.
The Amy family would like to thank Lamm Family Care Hospice for there exceptional care and compassion given to them and Mrs. Amy.
