State Fire Marshal seeks church fires info
ST. LANDRY PARISH - State Fire Marshal deputies, along with ATF agents, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding fires at three churches in St. Landry Parish.
On March 26, a fire was reported at the St. Mary Baptist Church in the 100 block of Saqueget Road in Port Barre.
On April 2, a fire was reported at the Greater Union Baptist Church in the 1400 block of Hwy 742 in Opelousas.
On April 4, a fire was reported at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in the 3900 block of Highway 182 in Opelousas.
In addition to the collaboration between the SFM and ATF, the FBI is participating in the case and St. Landry Fire Districts #2 and #3 are assisting.
At this time, investigators have identified suspicious elements in each case and those elements are being thoroughly probed.
“There is clearly something happening in this community,” said State Fire Marshal H. “Butch” Browning, “That’s why it’s imperative that the citizens of this community be part of our effort to figure out what it is.”
As investigators work diligently to get answers in these cases, the partnering agencies welcome information from the public.

Wolves continue district play, Ladies enter post-season play
RAYNE - With the Wolves trying to improve their district slate, the Lady Wolves are waiting to begin post-season action this week.
As the state 4-A brackets released early Wednesday morning, the Lady Wolves will meet hit the road this week against No. 3-ranked West Ouachita in the opening round of the 2019 LHSAA Softball Playoff 4-A Bracket.
The Lady Wolves will travel to West Ouachita on Friday for the 4 p.m. bi-district contest.
Ranked in the 30th slot, the Lady Wolves completed their district competition with a 4-6 slate competing against Teurlings, St. Thoams More, Northside, Westgate and Carencro.
Bi-district action is slated April 17, with winners continuing on to the regional round April 21.
Quarter, semi and final teams will take to the field in Sulphur at Frasch Park April 26-28 during the Allstate Sugar Bowl / LHSAA Softball State Tournament.
Wolves
The Rayne High Wolves are presently positioned at the No. 13 seed in power ranking with a 5-2 district slate.
During Tuesday afternoon diamond action, the Wolves hosted Westgate High at Gossen Memorial Park.
The Wolves hit the diamond hard both on offense and defense against the Tigers and claimed an 1803 district win.
Rayne was scheduled to travel to New Iberia Wednesday for another district encounter as hey will try to sweep the Westgate Tigers in district play.
Rayne came off a 12-8 win over Carencro High on April 2 and a 11-0 shutout of Northside High on March 28.
The Wolves will complete their district slate on April 16 and 18 when they face St. Thomas More.
Fans wanting to take in weekend baseball action are invited to attend Saturday’s varsity and junior varsity games at Gossen Memorial park in Rayne with the Woves will host Notre Dame High School of Acadia Parish.
Sherry Elizabeth Saltzman weds Christopher Hargrave
CROWLEY - Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church was the setting on Saturday, March 23, for an 11 a.m. wedding ceremony uniting in marriage Sherry Elizabeth Saltzman and Christopher Hargrave, both of Crowley.
The bride is the daughter of Norman Saltzman and Nancy Saltzman of Rayne. Her grandparents are Garrett and Yvonne Sarsfield of Rayne, Helen Constantine Saltzman of Lafayette, and the late Linus Saltzman of Gueydan.
She is a 1990 graduate of Rayne High School and is employed as a dealer at Coushatta Casino Resort.
The groom is the son of Mikki Cook of Crowley and the late Rod Bourgeois of Kaplan. His grandparents were the late Henry and Eva Hargrave of Crowley. He is a 1978 graduate of Crowley High School and is employed by Weatherford as a machinist.
Father Mathew Higginbotham was celebrant of the morning nuptials, with gifts offered by the couple’s mothers.
Escorted by her father, the bride wore a formal white wedding gown designed with capped sleeves, scoop neckline and a fitted bodice accentuated with lace and pearl appliques.
Attending the bride as matron of honor was her daughter, Amy Arsement Borazjani.
Bridesmaids were Jan Arsement, Magdalene Arsement, Hana Arsement and Sara Arsement, daughters of the bride.
Bridal attendants each wore a formal dress in a wine tone and carried ivory roses.
Attending the grooms as best man was Kenny “Boo” Trahan, a friend.
Groomsmen were Jude Peltier, Luke Arsement, Tony Arsement and Jake Grotefend, sons of the bride.
Male attendants each wore a dark grey tuxedo with a bow tie in a wine tone.
Ushers were Brad Saltzman, Scott Saltzman and Steven Saltzman, brothers of the bride.
Immediately following the wedding ceremony, the couple was honored during a reception held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Hall.
Following their wedding, the couple honeymooned in San Antonio, Texas.
The newlyweds are making their home in Crowley.
Post 77 nominates officers, plans Rayne Memorial Day program
RAYNE - Following a most successful Legion Centennial Celebration in March, the regular meeting schedule was attended for the April meeting of Arceneaux Post 77, American Legion.
As in years past, legionnaires were nominated for election which is held every May meeting.
As directed by Commander David Simon, the following legionnaires were nominated: Commander David Simon, 1st Vice Ray Olinger, 2nd Vice Robley Moroux, 3rd Vice John Quebodeaux, Financial Officer Lorriane Shelton Gaines, Junior past Commander Gene Comeaux, Adjutant Brady Menard, Historian open, Chaplain Robert Comeaux, Service Officer open, Judge Advocate Shane Mouton, Sgt.-at-Arms Andrew Habetz, Color Bearers Wilson LeDoux and Harold Arceneaux, and Advisors to Commander will be selected by the Commander once elections are complete.
Nominations will be held once again during the May meeting just prior to the election. New officers will be installed during the annual July installation meeting/banquet.
Chairman Ray Olinger announced plans for the annual Memorial Day Program slated Sunday, May 26, at 10 a.m. at the Legion Home. All veterans and family members of deceased veterans are invited to attend. Veterans who have passed on since last Memorial Day will be recognized. Additional information will be reported during the May meeting.
Olinger also gave a report of the 2019 Boys State Program slated in the summer months for high school juniors. Noted were two packets delivered to Rayne High School for prospective attendees.
It was also announced the orientation meeting for Boys and Girls State will again be held at the local Legion Home on June 6 at 5 p.m. prior to the summer program.
Olinger gave the membership report of 137 paid up members of the 173 roster. He urged all legionnaires to pay their dues before the May deadline.
Simon thanked all the legionnaires and volunteers for their assistance and help during the Legion Centennial Celebration held in March. He noted the day was very successful and Post 77 welcomed a number of visitors despite having a number of other events the same weekend.
He also gave a brief outline of the 7th District Spring Conference held March 24 in Alexandria.
In addition, info was given for the Summer Conference planned June 6-9 in Alexandria. Post 77 will have five votes by delegates to be selected during the May meeting.
Simon also announced two projects presently underway at the War Veterans Home in Jennings, expansion of the Alzheimer’s unit and a new cemetery to be built directly behind the War Veterans Home. Additional information of the projects will be given as progress continues.
Simon reported of the recent weekend musical entertainment and events held at the Legion Home, in addition to a number of events planned in the coming weeks, including Louisiana Knights on April 5 and Ronnie Matthews on April 13.
Following the maintenance report including projects and repairs recently completed at the Legion Home, it was noted the air conditioner in the kitchen area was replaced.
Legionnaires were reminded of the free insurance benefit available to all legionnaires in the amounts of $1,000 and $5,000. Please contact the American Legion locally or online for additional information.
The commander also reminded everyone that food and beverages are still available for purchase with an expanding menu at the Legion Home during normal bar hours. Call 334-4774 to place your pick-up orders.
Also continuing at the Legion Home is Cadillac and Domino games between 4 p.m. until closing every Thursday.
“Thirsty Thursday” drink specials will also be available from 7 p.m. till. All domestic beers are $1.50 a bottle.
With no further business to come before the Post, the meeting was adjourned and a meal was served by the Legion cooks.
APTS/Armstrong High School reunion set, day proclaimed
RAYNE - During afternoon ceremonies Tuesday at City Hall, Mayor Charles “Chuck” Robichaux signed the official proclamation declaring April 18-20 as the “Acadia Parish Training School and Armstrong High School Grand Reunion - A Golden Celebration #thewaywewere.”
The Acadia Parish Training School/Armstrong High School Reunion Committee has put together an impressive and exciting agenda for this year’s reunion.
The theme — “The Golden Celebration” — will observe the 50th anniversary (1969-2019) and consist of historical activities, music, dancing, singing, a pep rally and games.
Activities are open to the general public include:
• April 18: meet and greet and children’s games and conversation (5-9 p.m.).
• April 19: (8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.) tour school and city tours; (7-9 p.m.) meal, happy hour and karaoke, followed by dance between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. at Ballroom.
April 20: business meeting at 9 a.m. followed by grand parade (11:30 a.m. line-up and rolls at 12:30 p.m.); pep rally and program (immediately following the parade at school).
Reunion activities open only to those registered will include:
Reunion Saturday Night Ball events include: 7 p.m. short program and sitdown meal, dancing 9 p.m.. until 12:45 a.m.
Among committee members in attendance for the proclamation signing were President Katie Jolivette, Vice President Elaine Sias, and committee members Rose Locksey, James Montgomery and Debra Smith.
Named honoree for his year’s celebration is JoAnn Eaglin Gage, a long-time educator who also introduced Head Start in Acadia Parish and Rayne.
Long-time educator and APTS graduate Rita T. Normand will be honored during the parade as Grand Marshal.
