NEW ORLEANS – The 4-A state football bracket was not kind to No. 31-ranked Rayne High School.
The Wolves met the Fighting Eagles of Warren Easton High School of New Orleans, the No. 2-ranked team of Class 4-A, during Friday’s opening round of the 2018 state playoffs.
In addition to the spread in the ranking difference, Mother Nature was also not kind to Friday night teams as extensive rain was collected in numerous areas of the state, providing the best of playing conditions.
The Eagles began their scoring bonanza on their first drive of the evening, a 60-yard rushing drive. A failed two-point conversion failed for a quick 6-0 lead with only two minutes off the clock.
On Rayne’s first drive, Darian Richard, Elijah Young and Jamarcus Monroe came up short, forcing a punt by Morgan Manuel. A block by the Warren Easton defense provided the Eagles field position to score their second touchdown from three yards out. Another two point conversion brought the Eagles to a 14-0 lead.
Rayne’s next drive was rolling along until a fumble gave Warren Easton another shot at the endzone, which they took just two plays later for a 20-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
The Wolves began their next drive at the 35-yard line with hopes of a score, but an incomplete pass and two short gains by Richard and Daigle saw Rayne with a three and out once again.
The Eagles countered with a pass completion and two short runs for another score and a 26-0 lead as the first quarter ended.
The second quarter brought about a defensive struggle between both teams.
Rayne was led with a quarterback sack by Marlon Forman, a pass slapped away by Jamarcus Monroe and a tackle for a loss by Ron Roberts as they kept the Eagles out of the endzone during the second quarter for a 26-0 halftime score.
The Warren Easton defense produced their offense in the second half by scoring on a pick-six midway through the third quarter. A two point conversion gave the Eagles a 34-0 lead at the five-minute mark of the quarter.
The Eagles hit the air for their next score, a 37-yard completion for a touchdown. A two point conversion put the score at 42-0 at the two-minute mark of the quarter.
On their last play of the third quarter, the Wolves saw Figaro and Richard with short gains, but a punt was needed once again. A high snap saw the Eagles collect two points on a safety for the 44-0 finale.
The Rayne offense was limited to 176 total yards with 157 yards on the ground.
Leading Rayne rushers was Darian Richard with 119 yards on 27 carries.
Jamarcus Monroe collected five carries for 33 yards while Carlos Figaro tallies 11 yards on three carries.
A limited passing game saw Collin LaCombe make one connection for 19 yards to Carlos Figaro.
On the defensive side for Rayne, Jamarcus Monroe and Marlon Forman each recorded three tackles on the night. Forman also collected a quarterback sack and a tackle for a loss.
Ron Roberts and Carlos Figaro had two tackles each. Roberts also recorded a tackle for a loss on the night.
Completing the defense for the Wolves were Miles Doucet, Devion Francis, Colin Broussard, Wyatt Comeaux, Tora Benoit and Bobby Guidry.
The Wolves completed their regular season with a 3-7 record in one of the toughest district in the region.
