Ida Legé Bertand

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Ida Legé Bertrand, 102, who died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, at 4:25 p.m. surrounded by her loving family.
Ida Lege’ Bertrand was the matriarch of six generations of Bertrands. She was born Jan. 22, 1916, to Alexon and Naomi Legé in a little sleepy community called Wright, La., located in Vermillion Parish in what was known as Legé Cove.
Ida was only 13 years old when the United States went into what was to be the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world, The Great Depression. This perhaps was just one of the many life-changing events that would make her the person we all know her as today.
On Dec. 2, 1933, she married the love of her life, Polite Bertrand. Despite wars, sickness and the depression they would go on to have four sons, Ulysses, Andrus, Norris and Ruston, along with two daughters, Ella and Sadie.
In 1981 Ida would suffer a life changing loss, her husband. She refused to give up. From that point on no matter what came her way Ida would always have a smile on her face and a heart filled with love. She loved her family dearly. Her love of God and family were most important things to her.
She loved to cook and feed people. She would have this uncanny way of knowing that someone would stop by. You might walk through the door hungry, but you would always leave with a belly full and a happy soul.
Then there was the BREAD!!! For reasons that only her and God knew, anytime anyone showed up on her doorstep they would be greeted with HOT FRESH BREAD!!!.
To say this woman is special is a gross understatement. From her first child all the way down to the 196th grandchild she was and always be the matriarch of six generations and dearly loved. Fly high you sweet precious soul. You will never be forgotten.
Fr. Jason Vidrine, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, will officiate for the services.
The family requested visiting hours Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. A rosary was recited Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial was in the Gueydan Cemetery.
Music for the Mass of Christian Burial will be provided by great-grandson, Brent Badon.
Mrs. Bertrand is survived by two daughters, Ella B. Sonnier of Crowley and Sadie Parent and husband Mike of Lake Charles; two sons, Andrus Bertrand of Crowley and Ulysses Bertrand and wife Julie of Meridian, Mississippi; one daughter-in-law, Ella Bertrand of Baldwin; 28 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 91 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Polite Bertrand; her parents, Alexon and Naomi Baudoin Legé; two sons, Ruston and Norris Bertrand; one grandchild, Eric Bertrand; one sister, Alida Lavergne; two brothers, Alpha and Clarence Legé; three daughters-in-law, Joyce, Jeanette and Hazel Bertrand; and one son-in-law, Preston Sonnier.
Pallbearers will be Aaron Bertrand, Steven Bertrand, Ray Harper, Jude Ewing, Jacob Barbier and Drake Hinton.
Honorary pallbearers John Paul, Jackson and Jake Landry and Josiah Lewallen.
The family wishes to thank Lamm Hospice, Drs. Leleux and Ronkartz along with her caregivers, Lora Miller and Martha Menard for their care, compassion and love of Mrs. Bertrand during her illness.
The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 901 E. Elm St., Crowley, LA 70526 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Words of comfort may be sent to the family at www.geesey-ferguson.com.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home, 301 N. Avenue F, Crowley, 337-783-3313.
