Daughters of Nefertiti present ‘Jewels of the Nile’ Cotillion
RAYNE - The Daughters of Nefertiti, Inc. presented their second annual “Jewels of the Nile” Cotillion on Saturday, April 28, at the Rayne Civic Center.
Theme for the evening presentation was “An Elegant Evening with Precious Jewels.”
Guests were welcomed by Chasity Minix, mistress of ceremonies.
The invocation was presented by Rev. Nathan T. Stevens, pastor of Starlight aptist Church, Rayne.
Greetings were delivered by Tasheka Butler, club member.
The debs were presented during “My Cherie Amour” by Phillip Martin. The waltz with their escorts were choreographed by Tasheka Butler.
The parent message was given as “Butterfly” by Mariah Carey was heard.
Allegra Plummer, club hictorian, presented the Miss Congeniality Award to Anastasia Dixion, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roderick Freeman and John Lazaro, and a Rayne High School junior.
Shandra Jolivette, last year’s honoree, crowned her successor, Queen Shanaya Thomas, daughter of Cutina LeBlanc and Daniel Thomas and a Rayne High School junior.

Tierra Charles, Rayne High School junior and daughter of Tarra Roberts and Ron Charles;

Club first vice prsident Valene Charles presented he toast to the royalty, followed by the Cotillion Queen promenade to “Golden” by Jill Scott.
Debs, parents, escorts and their parents were acknowledged by club treasurer Nicole Young-Norman, with club second vice presdient Laquinta Wycoff-Domingue acknowledge the Daughters of Nefertiti.
Club secretary MIllerson Wilridge gave the closing remarks for an enjoyed evening.
Special thanks were espressed by DJ Jeremy Thomas, photographer Hmble and Blessed, and volunteers Brenda Freeman, Claude Francis, Gerard Broussard ad Reginald Milstead.

Richard.
Established in 2016, the Daughters of Nefertiti Inc. is a nonprofit organization that fosters and furthers the ideas of sisterhood. The club consists of African-American women who are committed to public service and diverse health initiatives with the primary focus to encourage scholastic growth by unifying like- mined young women within the community.
The purpose of the organization is to reach the underprivileged and at-risk youth of our community and to expose them to the finer things in life and instill in them pride and self-respect for future growth. Together, they hope to save the youth in the community.
Wolves shut out Franklin Parish, advance to 4-A state quarterfinals
RAYNE - The No. 23-ranked Rayne High Wolves have proven it’s not how you’re ranked, but how you play the game as they head into the 4-A state quarterfinals this week.
“I’ve told this guys more than once, one play at a time and one game at a time,” stated Rayne High Head Coach Jason Bonin following Saturday’s 11-0 shutout of No. 26-ranked Franklin Parish of the Winnsboro area.
“They are doing what they have worked for all season,” Bonin continued as he accesses the regional win on the Wolves’ home diamond. “On offense, we are seeing the ball, making contact and executing the play.
“Defensively, I can’t say enough,” Bonin noted while discussing the two double plays his infield turned during the afternoon win.
“If the ball gets in the outfield, our guys are there and know where to go. It’s coming to them automatically now, something you always want to see as a coach, especially at this point.”
Helping Saturday’s effort was a complete game shutout by Rayne hurler Colin LaCombe who allowed only two hits and zero runs over five innings. Lacombe recorded the last 15 outs to earn the save for the Wolves.
Beginning the scoring attack for the Wolves was Alex Savoy who tagged home on a passed ball for a quick 1-0 Rayne lead at the top of the second frame.
The third inning saw Damarcus James, Zach Fontenot and Christian Comeaux all touch home for a 4-0 lead for the Wolves.
The fourth inning saw Tanner LaGrange tag home for another Rayne score.
But, the icing on the cake came in fifth inning when the Wolves made a wrap around their line-up scoring six six runs for the eventual 11-0 fifth inning shutout.
James had a big day with two hits including a triple and three RBIs.
Comeaux, Fontenot, LaGrange, Harvey and Babineaux also collected hits with productive RBIs to contribute towards the win.
In Friday’s first game of the series, Franklin Parish got their offense started early scoring ane run.
But, the Wolves collected four runs in the fourth inning for a decent lead.
Rayne’s Christian Comeaux hit into a fielder’s choice which scored a run. Zach Fontenot’s sacrafice fly scored another Rayne run. Then, Darian Richard homered on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs.
Julian Harvey took the win for Rayne on the mound. He allowed three runs on five hits over four and a third innings, striking out five.
Will Arceneaux and Bryce Gatte entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Gatte recorded the last two outs to earn the save for the Wolves.
McMurray took the loss for Franklin Parish. He went three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out one.
Rayne scattered 12 hits for the win seeing Alex Savoy, Demarcus James, Richard, and Gatte all collecting multiple hits for the Wolves.
Savoy went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Rayne in hits.
On defense, Rayne was spotless, not commiting a single error in the field. James had the most chances in the field with eight.
The Wolves will now host Westgate from there own district this week in the quarterfinals. Westgate defeated Warren Easton in three games over the weekend.
Quarterfinal action begins Thursday at 6 p.m., the first of the best of three, The second game is slated for Friday at 6 p.m. With a split, the third game will immediately follow on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Action will take place at Gossen Memorial Park in Rayne.
Quarterfinal winners qualify for the semis and the 4-A State Baseball Tournament slated May 9-12 at McMurry Park in Sulphur.
2018 Debutante Ball planned this weekend
In preparation of this weekend’s 2018 Debutante Introductions and Ball, the Ebonite Civic and Social Club of Rayne, Inc., hosted its annual Debutante Tea on Sunday, April 29, at the Mural Room of the Rayne Civic Center Complex.
The Debs were welcomed by club members, in addition to last year’s honoree, Tajuné Butler.
Presiding over the social was Joan Francis-Brown, Ebonite President and event chairperson.
A prayer was led by Theresa Wilson, with introduction of the Debs and their escorts prior to a praise dance featuring Little Miss Amelia Guidry.
Each of the Debs performed a talent, incuding dance, songs and poetry.
A duet selection was performed by Jackie and Jessica Wiltz, followed by a Hip-Hop dance selection presented by Jazzmin Evans.
Door prizes were awarded with refreshments then enjoyed by all in attendance.
Special thanks were extended to the Deb parents for allowing their daughters to be presented into society by the Ebonite Civic and Social Club of Rayne.
Deb Ball chairperson is Joan Francis Brown, with Ursula Hawkins serving as co-chairperson. Deb Ball committee members are Stephanie Breaux, Jacqueline Wiltz and Evelyn W. Julian.

This year’s Ball will be held this weekend on Saturday, May 5, at the Rayne Civic Center.
Couple announces June wedding
A six-thirty evening wedding ceremony on June 8, 2018, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in rayne will unite in marriage Taylor Paige Hollier and Jonathan Philip Hebert, both of Rayne. A reception will follow at The Warehouse Event Center, also in Rayne.
The bride-elect is the daughter of Sammy and Paula Hollier of Rayne. Her grandparents are Earl and Janelle Meche of Maurice, James Norris and Paul Leger of Rayne, Geraldine Hollier of Rayne and the late Joseph Lurlin LeJeune.
Taylor is a 2012 graduate of Rayne High School, will attain a degree in radiology from LSU-Eunice in May, and will be employed by Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center.
The prospective groom is the son of Phil and Kim Hebert of Rayne. His grandparents are Ray and Karen Hebert of Rayne and the late Earl and Theresa Leger.
Jonathan is a 2011 graduate of Notre Dame High School of Acadia Parish in Crowley, attained a degree in kinesiology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2015, and is employed by LeBlanc’s Trailer Sales.
Following their wedding, the couple will reside in Rayne.
Kellen Katherine Dawson weds Ryan Hunter Stevison
Kellen Katherine Dawson and Ryan Hunter Stevison were united in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony on Saturday, April 21, 2018, in the chapel of the Academy of Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau with Fr. Allen Breaux officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Mark Dawson of Rayne. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Audrey LeBeau Hornsby and the late E.J. Hornsby of New Roads, and the and the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Charles Dawson II of Morganza.
Kellen is a 2010 graduate of the Academy of the Sacred Heart and a 2014 graduate of Millsaps College, where she received a Bachelor of Science in biology. She is currently a fourth year medical student at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and will graduate in May. She will complete a residency in pathology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
The groom is the son of Dr. and Mrs. James Mitchell Stevison of Madison, Alabama. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Tracy of Laurel, Mississippi, the late Bill Rogers of Laurel, Mississippi, and Mrs. Jesmine Stevison and the late James Vincent Stevison of Evans.
Ryan is a 2010 graduate of Westminister Christian Academy in Hunstville, Alabama and a 2014 graduate of Millsaps College where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He also received a Master of Business Adminstration from Millsaps College in 2015 and is presently a senior financial analyst for Raytheon in Tucson, Arizona.
Escorted by her father, the bride wore an elegant, long-sleeved wedding gown with chantilly lace bodice and floating slik chiffon skirt by designer Anne Barge. She finished off her look with a classic tulle layered veil and carried a bouquet of white and blush colored hydrangeas and peonies. Her bouquet was adorned with her maternal grandmother’s rosary.
Erin Dawson Alexander, sister of the bride, served as matron of honor.
Bridesmaids included Katlyn Mackenzie Stevison, sister of the groom, as well as Dana Diesi Craft, Ellen Angelle Faulk and Emily Vidrine Treloar, friends of the bride.
Kaylin Aubrey Caswell, niece of the bride, served as junior bridesmaid.
Bridesmaids each wore a celadon off-the-shoulder chiffon gown with ruched crossover bodice and shirred skirt.
James Brandon Stevison, brother of the groom, served as best man.
Groosmen were Kirk Keith Clark, Christopher Robert Hood, Ryan Michael McKay and Simon Paul Sherman, all friends of the groom.
Serving as ushers were Evan Murphy Broome and John Nolan Killebrew, friends of the groom.
Adalyn Claire Caswell, niece of the bride, served as flower girl, while Reid Edward Holtzman, nephew of the bride, served as ring bearer.
Readers included Simone Lirette Laroussini and Alexandra Marie Hubbell, both friends of the bride.
Ryan and Lindsey Bergeron, cousins of the bride, served as gift bearers.
Following the wedding ceremony, a reception was held at The City Club at River Ranch in Lafayette.
Upon returning from a honeymoon to Oahu and Mauri, the couple will reside in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Legion welcomes guests, new members
RAYNE - The April meeting of Arceneaux Post 77, American Legion, saw legionnaires welcome two new members and a guest during an abbreviated meeting held at the Legion Home.
Commander David Simon welcomed Frank Richard, 7th District Vice Commander, who gave a report of the Boys State program and urged legionnaires to concentrate on membership and annual dues for the post.
“Not only do we need to recruit veterans to become legionnaires,” state Richard, “but, we also have to retain who we have on a yearly basis.”
On the annual Boys State program, a reminder was given of the local post to again host the 7th District orientation on June 13 at the Legion Home in Rayne.
The 2018 Boys State program will again be held in June at Northwestern State University.
Under membership, it was noted that 151 memberships have been paid, excluding any dues received during the meeting.
Also welcomed to the meeting and speaking on behalf of the Sons of the Legion was Terry Broussard. He thanked everyone for their service and help, and also expressed his appreciation to Keith LaFleur who manned the ticket sales and collected numerous donations for the spring fundraiser.
Discussion was held of the annual spring fundraiser, a sausage poboy dinner sale held Sunday, April 8, at the Legion Home. Proceeds will help build up needed funds for events sponsored by Post 77.
The mandatory paperwork for two new legionnaires who were welcomed during the March meeting was received, including Bobby Fracier and Michael Pastor.
Robert Comeaux reported the kitchen sink was replaced at the Legion Home with supplies donated by Robley Moroux, legionnaire.
Memorial report was also given by Comeaux which listed Elton Bourque, a past commander, who passed away on April 2. Comeaux asked all legionnaires to attend the funeral home service of when Post 77 presents a U.S. Flag to the Bourque family.
Commander Simon announced the events and programs planned at the Legion Home, in addition to a reminder for awards to be provided by Post 77 for end of the school year at local and area schools.
A number of forms and reminder were received by Lee John, who invited anyone interested in the events to contact hime following the meeting.
Commander Simon reminded anyone who would like to make a take-out order purchase at the Legion’s kitchen by the Auxiliary can do so by calling the Legion Home at 334-4774.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned and the Legion cooks provided a delicious meal.
Frog Festival Blood Drive set May 7
RAYNE - United Blood Services has partnered with the Rayne Frog Festival in an effort to collect life saving blood for the community while offering blood donors a special “thank you” gift.
While you prepare to attend the Frog Festival this year, prepare to save a life and donate blood and also score a free ride bracelet to help you celebrate the Frog Capital of the World.
Donate blood in the bloodmobile at the Chamber of Commerce located at 107 Oak St. on Monday, May 7, between 2:30-7 p.m. All donors will receive a voucher for a free ride bracelet to the Rayne Frog Festival, valued at $25. Bracelet vouchers are while supplies last, and are distributed on a first come, first serve basis.
As always, all blood types are needed. However, United Blood Services is always in need of type O negative red cells. Type O negative blood is the only type that can safely be given to patients of all blood types. Inquire about donating plasma and platelets.
Donors can also visit www.UnitedBloodServices.org the day of their donation and click on the “Health History Questionnaire”. This allows donors to complete the interview portion of their donation on-line, in the privacy of their home or office.
Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 and 17 years of age must have signed permission from a parent or guardian. Donors receive a free cholesterol test.
Donors also earn points in our “Hero in Me” online rewards store. Points can be redeemed for movie tickets, pizza, shopping cards and more at www.bloodhero.com. A photo ID is required to donate.
