Wolves, Ladies place at 4-4A District Meet, on to Regionals
LAFAYETTE - Several members of the Rayne High Track Team place during the 2018 4-4A District Track Meet held April 18 at Northside High School as announced by Coach Bryan Parker.
The boy’s team placed fifth overall with 25 point, while the girl’s team finished sixth 15 points.
For the Wolves, John Daigle placed third in the 110 high hurdles with a personal best of 17:47.
Daigle also placed fourth (1:35.20) as a member of the 4 x 200 relay along with teammates Darien Richard, Zack Fontenot and Marlon Forman.
Christian Svendson placed fourth in the discus with a 110-0 throw.
For the Lady Wolves, placing fourth in the 4 x 100 relay (54.53) were teammates Mariah Winbush, Shanaya Thomas, Tasia Duhon and Halle Young.
Tasha duhon leaped into a second place finish in the high jump with a personal best of 4-10.
“Considering the small squad we have, I think they faired good against the tough competition we faced,” stated Coach Parker.
“We have a larger number of kids who qualified for Regionals. We’ll see how things work out a Regionals.”
The Regionals were scheduled for April 25 at UL-Lafayette, followed by the 4-A State Meet slated My 5 at LSU in Baton Rouge.
Wolves collect first round win over Salmen
SLIDELL - The No. 23-ranked Rayne High Wolves traveled to Slidell Tuesday where they faced the No. 10-ranked Salmen High Spartans in the opening round of the 4-A state baseball playoffs. But, don’t let the numbers fool you.
The Wolves pulled together a defensive show and a strong count on the mound for a 3-1 extra inning win.
“We saw the ball well today,” stated Rayne High head coach Jason Bonin on his team’s first round win. “Plus a good outting by our pitchers and a great defensive game by our infield. It was a great game.”
Rayne racked up five hits during the win, two of those key in the extra innings by Zach Fontenot and Darian Richard who managed multiple hits, each collecting two hits to lead stats.
The Wolves even produced a squeeze play late in the extra innings for a score to place them ahead, where they remained for the 10-inning win.
Completing the Rayne hits was Christian Comeaux with a monster hit and much-needed RBI. Alex Savoy also helped the Rayne cause with a RBI.
Colin LaCombe got the win for Rayne on the mound as he surrendered one run on three hits over eight innings, striking out two. Bryce Gatte threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen, recording the last six outs to earn the save for the Wolves.
The Wolves completed their district slate on Thursday when they dopped their final district contest to St. Thomas More.
The 0-6 loss saw Tucker Babineaux, Tanner Lagrange and Alex Savoy lead the Rayne offense for the day for three hits, but the Cougars took an early lead and never let up.
Collin Broussard and Julian Harvey held the mound for the Wolves and took the district loss.
The Wolves will now host Franklin Parish out of Winnsboro this weekend during the regional round of playoff action.
The best of three will begin Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. game on Saturday. With a split, the third game is slated for 4:30 p.m. at Gossen Memorial Park in Rayne.
Rayne couple celebrated 70th wedding anniversary
RAYNE - Russell and Meritha Domingue of Rayne were honored on Sunday, April 15, 2018, during a reception at their home in observance of their 70th wedding anniversary.
The afternoon social was hosted by the couple’s grandchildren.
The couple was married on April 10, 1948, during a wedding ceremony at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maurice. Their attendants were Waver Taylor and Clarence Fiest.
Mrs. Domingue is the former Meritha Comeaux, daughter of the late Richard and Anna Comeaux. She was a fulltime homemaker and also worked at Crowley Manufacturing Bay Company in Crowley.
Mr. Domingue is the son of the late Riley and Stella Domingue. He is a World War II veteran who served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. He is retired after 23 years as a member of the Rayne Police Department and CSI.
The couple’s children include Ann Washington, Lonis Domingue, Catherine Domingue, Shelia Roberts, Charleen Domingue, Betty Chaisson, Joyce Chaisson Peters, Kenneth Citizen and the late Daniel Domingue.
They are also the grandparents of 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The couple are parishioners of the Shrine of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church.
Family and guests enjoyed a delicious meal and a special anniversary cake prepared and provided by the couple’s grandchildren.
Daughters of Nefertiti to host Jewels of the Nile Cotillion
The Daughters of Nefertiti Second Annual Jewels of the Nile Cotillion will be held this weekend on Saturday, April 28, at the Rayne Civic Center.
The 2018 event will begin at 8 p.m. for the eight young ladies to be presented.
The Daughters of Nefertiti Inc. is a nonprofit organization that fosters and furthers the ideas of sisterhood. The club consists of African-American women who are committed to public service and diverse health initiatives with the primary focus to encourage scholastic growth by unifying like- mined young women within the community.
The purpose of the organization is to reach the underprivileged and at-risk youth of our community and to expose them to the finer things in life and instill in them pride and self-respect for future growth. Together, they hope to save the youth in the community.
Club members include Curtrese Minix, Valene Charles, LaQuinta Wycoff, Millerson Wilridge, LaRhonda Yokum Guidry, Tajuana Bessard, Crystal Cailliet, Nicole Norman, Allegra Plummer, Rachel Minix, Tonya Pabum, Timeka Butler, Tasheka Butler and Kayla S. Richard.

Yvonne Lena Baer Gary
HOUSTON, TEXAS - Yvonne Lena Gary passed away on April 17, 2018. She was born on October 7, 1927 in Rayne, Louisiana to parents Jeanne and Louis H. Baer.
The family received friends for visitation on Monday, April 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with funeral services held at 12:30 p.m. in the Grand Chapel at Brookside Funeral Home in Houston, Texas.
Burial followed at Brookside Memorial Park and Cemetery, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, Texas.
She is survived by her four grandchildren, Monica Faries and husband Garth, Patrice Puckett and husband Tracy, Daniel Shaffner, and Joseph Shaffner and wife Cathy; 10 great-grandchildren, Paul, Peter, Anna, Jacob, Caleb, Ian, Sarah, Timothy, Keagan and Michael; brother, Max Baer; sister, Kay Weider; and numerous friends and other family members.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her loving husband, Claude Gary; her parents, Jeanne and Louis H. Baer; a daughter, Claudia Shaffner; a son, Claude Gary Jr.; and eight siblings.
Pallbearers were Joseph Shaffner, Garth Faries, Paul Wright, Tracy Puckett, Peter Gural and Ian Puckett.
Brookside Funeral Home in Houston, Texas (281-449-6511) was in charge of funeral arrangements.
George Von Keisler Robinson
George Von Keisler Robinson, 67, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, passed away April 16, 2018.
He was born May 21, 1950, in Crowley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George V. Robinson and Beatrice Guidry; his wife, Veronica Robinson; and one daughter, Reba Robinson.
He is survived by one daughter, Treba Vallien (Christopher Sr.) of Fort Smith, Arkansas; one son, Kevin Minix of Crowley; seven grandchildren, Keira Minix, Mylah Conley, Kennedy Minix, Raeven Drake, Jahre Releford, Chris’Asia Vallien and Christopher Vallien Jr.; two sisters; Bella Robinson (Michael) of Beaumont, Texas, and Effie Kindle (Frank) of Houston, Texas; and his son-in-law James Releford.
A viewing was held on Friday, April 20, at Lewis-Roberts Funeral Chapel, 4817 Kelley Hwy., Fort Smith, Arkansas. There will also be a viewing on Saturday, April 28, from 9-11 a.m. at Holy Temple Church, 824 W. 14th Street, Crowley, with the funeral service to begin at 11 a.m.
Interment will follow at West Crowley Cemetery under the direction of Riley-Smith Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., Dequincy.
