Omicron blamed for surge

LDH reports hospitalizations doubled in week

The number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus in Louisiana nearly doubled over the last week, the fastest weekly increase the state has seen over the course of the pandemic, according to the state Department of Health.
The rapid rise in hospitalizations brought the total number of patients to 449 — about 80% of whom were unvaccinated — over the Christmas weekend as the highly-transmissible Omicron variant makes its way across the state.
The total number of patients is still low compared to the heights that figure had reached during prior waves. But the rare weekend update from the health department shows officials are growing increasingly concerned that the quick spread of Omicron may once again strain hospital resources.
The surge in hospitalizations comes as new infections climbed dramatically over the holiday weekend. Nearly 9,550 new cases were reported in the three days following Dec. 23, more than the entire amount tallied for the week before.
That brought the total number of infections for the week to nearly 20,000 — the highest that figure has been since mid-September.
Those new case numbers did not include people who tested positive on at-home tests, according to the Department of Health. Such tests have become increasingly common over the past month as people have scrambled to find out their status ahead of the holidays and have encountered long lines at community sites and urgent cares.
In addition to the new cases, the Department of Health reported about 1,230 people who had once again come down with the coronavirus after being infected earlier in the pandemic.
The department does not regularly provide information on the number of those reinfected after recovering from the virus, so it is unclear how those figures compare to earlier waves.
The department said vaccines will protect against severe illness and hospitalization caused by COVID-19, though it warned breakthrough infections are likely for those vaccinated.
Ahead of New Year’s Eve, the Department of Health urged Louisiana residents to wear masks, work remotely, limit exposure and get tested before and after traveling or gathering.
Anyone with questions regarding vaccines is asked to call Louisiana’s vaccine hotline at (855) 453-0774.

Unseasonably warm weather to continue

The Acadiana area spent the Christmas weekend in record-setting territory, breaking the record high on Sunday and tying it on Christmas Day, and it looks like that trend will continue through the upcoming week.
Highs are going to be in the low 80s, likely falling just shy of the record, but certainly warmer than the average for this time of year.
The average temperatures for this area in late December are 63 for the high and 44 for the low.
The temperatures will be getting into the 80s through the rest of the week, which would make this the warmest December on record.
Lows should range in the mid-60s with areas of fog possible.
Monday’s cloudy skies and spotty showers are expected to continue to linger through the rest of the week, with showers becoming more scattered today and eventually stormy Wednesday.
Some of Wednesday’s storms may become severe, although any severe weather should be isolated and short lived.
The rest of the week is going to remain very warm with highs continuously in the 80s along with scattered rain chances through into the new year.
A strong cold front is in the forecast over the weekend which could bring a significant severe threat into Acadiana late Saturday followed by much colder weather on Sunday.

U.S. Sen. Kennedy warns against proposed SBA direct lending program

U.S. Sen. John Kennedy is trying to stop an effort to allow the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) from making direct government loans through its 7(a) lending program.
The 7(a) program provides up to $5 million for eligible borrowers to spend on real estate, short- and long-term working capital, refinancing of current business debt and “furniture, fixtures and supplies.”
Private banks typically issue the loans, but a provision in the Build Back Better congressional spending bill would allow the government agency to use taxpayer funds to make loans directly to selected businesses.
The provision, known as Section 100502, or the Funding for Credit Enhancement and Small Dollar Loan Funding, would allocate nearly $4.5 billion over 10 years for the lending program.
Republican lawmakers, including Kennedy, and multiple banking associations have warned against crowding out private lending entities in favor of government workers. Kennedy and others sent a letter to Senate leadership in October, citing past abuses regarding singular SBA direct loan initiatives.
Kennedy introduced legislation Tuesday to block the proposed 7(a) practice outright, along with U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and 18 cosponsors, including Louisiana Republican U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy.
“The government shouldn’t encroach on a space where private lenders are already doing a good job getting funds to the small businesses that need them,” Kennedy said.
“Forcing community banks and local credit unions to compete with a massive government agency is inefficient and wrong,” Scott said. “Funneling tax dollars through the federal government in order to loan it back to small business owners with interest makes no sense.”
The SBA direct loan provision comes as part of a $25 billion small business package contained in the multitrillion dollar Democratic Build Back Better bill.
House Small Business Committee chair Rep. Nydia Velázquez, D-N.Y., has said the funding is critical to moving beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Small businesses are the foundation of our economy and ultimately the key to our nation making a full economic recovery,” Velázquez said.
Kennedy referred to an inspector general’s report on the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program as evidence for concern. The report estimated the government-run lending initiative advanced $79 billion in potentially fraudulent loans.
The inspector general’s office was alerted to potential fraud problems only when private banking institutions reported red flags upon receiving EIDL deposits, the report read.
“We have received complaints of more than 5,000 instances of suspected fraud from financial institutions receiving economic injury loan deposits,” the report read.

Four Tigers receive baseball All-America recognition

Four LSU players received 2022 preseason All-America recognition from Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
Outfielder Dylan Crews and infielder Jacob Berry were named first-team All-Americans; first baseman Tre’ Morgan was voted to the second team; and outfielder Gavin Dugas was a third-team selection.
Crews, the 2021 Perfect Game National Freshman of the Year, hit .362 (89-for-246) last season with 16 doubles, two triples, 18 homers, 42 RBI, 64 runs scored and 12 stolen bases. The product of Longwood, Fla., also received All-America, Freshman All-America, Second-Team All-SEC and Freshman All-SEC recognition, and he was voted the Louisiana Freshman of the Year.
He finished No. 1 in the SEC last season in total bases (163), No. 3 in batting average, No. 3 in on-base percentage (.453), No. 4 in base hits, No. 4 in runs scored, No. 5 in doubles and No. 5 in home runs.
Berry, who transferred this summer to LSU from Arizona, led the Wildcats to the 2021 College World Series and the Pac-12 championship.
A product of Queen Creek, Ariz., Berry batted .352 in 2021 with team highs of 17 homers and 70 RBI, and Collegiate Baseball newspaper named him the National Co-Freshman of the Year.
Berry earned first-team All-America recognition from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and he received second-team All-America honors from D1Baseball and Perfect Game.
Morgan, a product of New Orleans, batted .357 (89-for-249) in 2021 with 16 doubles, four triples, six homers, 42 RBI, 64 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.
Dugas, a native of Houma, led the SEC in RBI last season with 66, and he was No. 3 in the league in home runs with 19, including two grand slams. He was also No. 5 in slugging percentage (.641) and No. 8 in total bases (141).
Dugas batted .295 (65-for-220) in 2021 with 13 doubles, three triples and 54 runs scored.

Warriors edge Vikings in tournament finale

The Northside Christian Warriors didn’t exactly set the world on fire with their free throw shooting Wednesday afternoon in their round robin tournament finale at Teurlings High School.
In fact, they shot a dismal 41 percent from the charity stripe, making just 15 of their 37 attempts.
But, with the game hanging in the balance, the Warriors got the ball to the right man.
Jagger Thibodeaux went 8-for-8 from the free throw line down the stretch, sinking six straight in the final minute to help lift the Warriors to a thrilling 52-50 victory over Opelousas Catholic.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well at the line and that has been a problem for us all season, but Jagger really came through when we needed him the most,” said NCS coach Glenn Daigle of his senior guard who went 12-for-15 from the stripe and finished with a team-high 16 points.
“He’s been one of our most consistent free throw shooters and he knocked down some really big ones for us today.”
Thibodeaux’s first two free throws of the final frame gave the Warriors a 48-47 lead with just under a minute remaining.
The Vikings turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions after that and each time, they fouled Thibodeaux.
He calmly stepped to the line with ice in his veins and sank all four free throw attempts to push the lead to 52-47 with seven seconds remaining.
The Vikings didn’t quit, however.
Markaas Daughtery knocked down a long-range 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds remaining to trim the lead to 52-50 and the Vikings took a quick time out.
Daughtery nearly played the hero role by stealing the Warriors’ inbounds pass under the Vikings’ own goal, but Thibodeaux fouled him on a shot attempt that just rimmed out.
The foul paid off with Daughtery missing the first free throw attempt with no time remaining to seal their fate.
“That was a crazy finish,” said Daigle. “We should have never turned the ball over right there, but we did and Jagger had to foul him. Fortunately, the kid missed.”
Free throws weren’t the only thing that hurt the Warriors. They also turned the ball over 13 times in the second half, including seven times in the fourth quarter, enabling the Vikings to claw back into the game.
The Vikings, who trailed by as many as 14 in the third quarter, went on a 17-4 run to start the final period and they took their first lead since early in the opening frame at 45-44 with just over four minutes remaining.
The Vikings’ only lead prior to that point was on Baylin Ford’s layup in the first minute of the contest.
The lead switched hands twice after that before Thibodeaux’s heroics at the free throw line put the Warriors ahead for good.
“We had 24 turnovers and most of the time, you’re not going to win a game doing that,” said Daigle. “Fortunately, we had a good cushion going into the fourth quarter and we were able to withstand their run.”
The Vikings also had their issues with turnovers.
They turned the ball over seven times in the opening frame and the Warriors converted most of them into points to take a 19-5 advantage.
The Warriors turned the ball over six times in the second frame and the Vikings closed the gap to 11 entering the half down 28-17.
The two teams played nearly even in the third quarter and the Warriors led 40-28 heading into the final stanza.
Thibodeaux was the leader for the Warriors with 16 points. He also logged 14 assists.
Garrett Kidder added 11 points and Caleb Hanks had 10.
In addition to the leaders, Joseph Woods scored seven points, Jake Morgan added five and Andrew Woods had three.
Doughtery paced the Vikings with 20 points. Chris Brown and Ford also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Warriors finished 2-1 in the tournament and improved to 9-11 overall heading into Monday’s matchup against Hanson Memorial at 2 p.m. in the St. Edmund tournament.
“It wasn’t a pretty win, but it’s still a win,” said Daigle. “And it’s a win against a bigger school so that’s always good.
“To get two out of three games here against larger schools, that hopefully gives us some momentum heading into the St. Edmund tournament next week.”

Bears dominate 5-3A All-District selections

The Church Point Bears were the most dominant team in Acadia Parish during the regular season on both sides of the football.
