LDH issues updated guidance as COVID-19 Omicron variance spreads

The Louisiana Department of Health has issued updated guidance for the holidays, as the Omicron variant spreads and COVID-19 trends worsen.
“CDC estimates that Omicron is now the dominant COVID-19 variant in the United States and in Louisiana’s region,” said State Epidemiologist Theresa Sokol. “It is startling how quickly this happened, but it is not surprising.”
Meanwhile, COVID-19 incidence, statewide percent positivity and hospitalizations are on the rise. LDH reports a 60% increase in COVID-19 incidence, when comparing last week and this week’s 7-day averages. Also, COVID-19 hospitalizations have continued to increase over the last four days. Statewide percent positivity increased from 2.2% last week to 3.3% this week.
Two weeks ago, 35% of parishes were at “substantial” or “high” risk of COVID-19 spread in the community, a categorization based on a community indicator classification system developed by the CDC. Last week, 65% of parishes fell into these two highest-risk categories. LDH will report updated data this Wednesday, but anticipates the vast majority of parishes in Louisiana will find themselves at “substantial” or “high” community risk this week.
In light of this rapidly evolving situation and because we know families are traveling and gathering over the next two weeks, LDH is sharing updated public health guidance so that families can celebrate safely:
To protect yourself, get vaccinated and, if eligible, get boosted. The COVID-19 vaccine protects against severe outcomes from COVID, including hospitalization and death. If you are not yet vaccinated, you are unprotected. While getting the vaccine protects you from a severe outcome, a vaccinated person can still transmit the virus to others.
If you have questions about vaccines, you can speak to a medical professional and learn about vaccination sites near you by calling Louisiana’s vaccine hotline at 855-453-0774.
To reduce transmission, regardless of vaccination status, mask indoors when not with your everyday household. LDH recommends wearing masks indoors in all public settings. People should consider wearing a mask indoors in private settings as well, especially if you are gathering with individuals at a high risk of severe outcome, which includes older people and those with underlying health conditions. Masks are effective in protecting infection against all of the currently circulating variants.
Regardless of vaccination status, get tested multiple times. Get a test before you travel, before a gathering, and upon returning from travel. Remember that COVID-19 tests are snapshots in time.
There are COVID-19 test sites throughout Louisiana. Visit ldh.la.gov/covidtesting or call 211 to find a test site near you. As a reminder, all community-based sites operated by the Louisiana National Guard (LANG) will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Church Point man accused of stalking

Hogness allegedly harassed store clerk in Duson

A Church Point man has been arrested on felony stalking charges in connection with several incidents at a Duson store, police say.
Duson Police Chief Kip Judice says that Kyle G. Hogness, 26, was booked with one count of felony stalking while armed with a dangerous weapon.
Hogness was arrested by Church Point Police Saturday after Duson Police obtained a warrant.
The Duson warrant alleges that Hogness approached a convenience store clerk in Duson on or about Dec. 14, around 3 a.m., and, after the clerk declined romantic advances by the man, Hogness allegedly made threats to the clerk and racial slurs at her.
She didn’t file a police report, but then the next day Hogness allegedly returned just before 4 a.m., had an argument with the same clerk and allegedly threw a glass beer bottle at her.
The warrant alleges that Hogness initially fled the area in a pickup truck but returned to the immediate area and watched while officers were investigating the complaint.
Hogness was issued a summons for assault and was banned from the property where the victim worked.
The very next day, on Dec. 16, at 3:30 a.m., Hogness returned to the convenience store driving the same truck as used in the two previous incidents and was located by Duson Police and issued a summons for entry after forbidden.
But on Saturday, he returned again, this time around 2 a.m.
This time he was in a different vehicle and was wearing a long trench-type coat and a face mask in an attempt to alter his identity, police say.
He threatened the victim with a knife and told her that the security guard was not going to be able to protect her now, the warrant alleges.
Duson Police arrived and reviewed video which confirmed that Hogness had parked his white car behind the building facing the street for an apparent escape route versus parking in the lined parking lot in front of the store.
Hogness is being held at the Acadia Parish Jail in lieu of a $5,000 bond.
Judice said the investigation is continuing and additional charges against Hogness are possible.
Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the Duson Police at 337 873-6736.

USDA surveying sheep and goat operations nationwide

Starting in late December, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will measure sheep and goat inventories and wool and mohair production during a nationwide survey.
“Interest in sheep and goat data continues to grow with increased diversification in agriculture and consumer demands,” said Kathy Broussard, Louisiana State Statistician. “The Sheep and Goat Survey gives producers the opportunity to report the latest information on conditions and trends in the industry.”
Louisiana operators surveyed will be asked to provide information about their sheep and goat inventories, counts of lambs and kids born during 2021 and production and prices received for wool and mohair.
In Louisiana, NASS will contact about 300 operations to request their responses to the survey.
“Accurate data on sheep and goat inventory and production is a significant decision-making tool for USDA and the industry to be more responsive to domestic and international markets and consumer needs,” Broussard said. “The information can also help create public appreciation for the many benefits of U.S. sheep and goats and their needed products.”
To make it as easy as possible for producers to participate in the survey, NASS offers the option of responding online, by telephone or by mail.
The results of this survey will be available in aggregate form only, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identified, as required by federal law.
NASS will publish the survey results January 31, 2022 in the Sheep and Goats report. This and all NASS reports are available online at www.nass.us
