Area standouts shine on collegiate level during opening weekend

The baseball bloodlines run deep in the Ashby and Doughty family and the two had a lot to cheer about on the opening weekend of the season.
Alex Ashby and his cousin Will Doughty were both in action as their respective teams opened their 2020 campaigns and each performed at a high level.
Alex, the son of Chuck and Lori Ashby, went 4-for-8 at the plate for Louisiana College as the Wildcats took two out of three games from Alma College.
Ashby, a former Crowley High standout and transfer from Angelina College, started all four games for the Wildcats in right field and logged a pair of doubles and drove in four runs on the weekend.
Will, a former Iota High standout and the son of Christian and Connie Doughty, went 1-for-4 for Bossier Parish Community College in a 4-2 loss to Wharton County JC. He also drove home a run in a 10-0 victory over Baton Rouge Community College.
In addition, a pair of former Notre Dame standouts also had a big weekend for Bossier Parish.
Collin Kirsch went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Elliot Hebert was 1-for-3 with an RBI against BRCC.
In softball action, a trio of local standouts are off to a good start for Andy Lee’s Northwest Florida State College.
Abby Higginbotham, a Notre Dame product, is hitting .542 for the Raiders through nine games with a double and five RBI. The sophomore has struck out just once in 24 at bats.
Former Crowley High standout Sckylier Baronet is hitting .375 with a double, a triple and three RBI and Haley Maloz, a freshman out of Notre Dame, is 1-for-2 on the season.
