Notre Dame qualifies nine for state tennis tourney
The top Louisiana high school tennis talent will be competing at the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA State Tennis Tournament in Monroe Thursday and Friday and Notre Dame will be well represented thanks to some notable qualifying wins at last week’s Division III Regional Tennis Tournament in Lake Charles.
The Pios had several impressive wins and a men’s singles title that earned nine players a spot in the state tournament. The Pioneer men’s team finished second overall and the Lady’s team finished fourth.
Leading the men’s team was Austin Lamm (12-1) who captured the men’s singles tournament title and guaranteed himself a seeded spot in the state singles competition.
Lamm competed at the state tournament last year in doubles and earned his way back this year with a dominant district record and equally impressive singles tournament title. Also advancing are singles player, Patrick Cormier (10-2), and the doubles team of Cameron Russell and Jack Frank.
The Lady Pios No. 1 doubles team of Meghan Thibodeaux and Ellie Fields (13-3) advanced to the semifinals and punched their ticket to the next level. Also earning a berth in the state tournament playing in the No. 2 doubles spot are Audrey Leonards and Catherine Gonzales and singles player Addie Belaire.
“I'm really proud of this team and how they competed all season. I’m happy Austin could bring home a singles title,” said Coach DeAnn Goss. “The tournament results are a testament to their hard work and enthusiasm. Our entire team showed great sportsmanship and battled hard all season. I am looking forward to competing at state".
Also seeing action during the tournament were Grace Bernard, Sydney Spallino, Amalie Link, Robert Albritton, Cameron Nelson, Sam Frank and Hunter Terro.
