Notre Dame tennis log first victory of season
The Notre Dame Lady Pios and Pios opened their 2020 tennis campaign on a high note last week with a sweep of Iota.
The boys and girls teams rallied to an 11-2 victory with wins in both singles and doubles play
“This is a great way to start our season,” said ND coach DeAnn Goss. “These kids played so well and I am proud of their performances.
“I’m looking forward to a fantastic season.”
Playing at No. 1 singles for the Pios was Austin Lamm, who was victorious against Luis Doroteo with a score of 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, Pio Jack Faulk, also won his match by defeating Tance Taylor, 6-0.
The Pios’ No. 1 doubles team of Zac Higginbotham and Landon Miller breezed through their match with a 6-3 win against Doroteo and Taylor.
Luke Quibodeaux and Russ Nugier defeated Ethan Cormier and Dustin Boulet 6-0, and Notre Dame’s No. 3 doubles team of Michael Goss and Ryan Goss were successful against Cormier and Boulet with a 6-1 victory. Rounding out doubles action for the Pios were Russ Nugier and Lane Gaspard, who lost to Doroteo and Taylor 6-2.
Not to be outdone, the Pios girls' team was also victorious and scored wins in singles and doubles.
Playing at the No. 1 singles position for the Pios was Maddie Oliver, who cruised to an 8-1 win over Iota’s Vanessa Doroteo. Gracie Mouton played at the No. 2 position and defeated Maddyson Guillory with a score of 8-3.
The Lady Pios No. 1 doubles team of Lilly Miller and Mary Grace Burleigh triumphed over Kiara Guidry and Tori Guidry with an 8-1 win. Playing No. 2 doubles for the Pios were Lily Heidtman and Claire Cormier, who pounced on Isabelle Mier and Kelsie Broussard with an 8-0 win.
The Pios No. 3 team of Camille Trahan and Andrus Kelbaugh were defeated by Doroteo and Guillory by a score of 8-2. The No. 4 team, consisting of Lily Heidtman and Mary Grace Burleigh, breezed by Kiara Guidry and Kadence Faulk with a 6-1 victory.
The Pios will entertain Catholic High of New Iberia Thursday (3:30 p.m.) at the Glady Trahan Tennis Centre.
