LAKE ARTHUR – The Notre Dame Lady Pios belted out 20 hits in five innings and easily cruised past Lake Arthur, 17-6, in their District 6-2A opener Wednesday evening.
Notre Dame improved to 16-2 overall and 1-0 in league play heading into yesterday’s matchup with Cecilia.
The Lady Pios used a pair of big innings to secure the mercy-rule victory.
To begin, they pushed across seven runs in the second inning on eight hits and one walk. Abigail Savoy had the big blow of the frame with a three-run home run. Corine Poncho started the inning with a solo home run and Keleigh Spell had a two-run, inside the park home run.
The Lady Pios had another seven-run outburst in the fifth inning that was highlighted by three RBI doubles - by Maci Bergeron, Savoy and Maddie Murrell.
Caylyn Henry, who had an RBI single in the fifth inning, paced the Lady Pios at the plate with a 4-for-4 performance that included a double.
Savoy added three hits, including a double and a home run, and five RBI. Murrell added two doubles, a single and three RBI and Callie Maitre had two singles and a double.
Bergeron and Spell each had two hits and two RBI, Macey Freed logged a single and drove in two runs, Poncho had a home run and Emma Kate Hensgens had a single.
Bailey Royer started the game in the circle and allowed five runs, four earned, on two hits and three walks. She struck out one in 1 1/3 innings.
Addy Gautreaux pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and allowed one unearned run on no hits and one walk. She struck out two.
