2019 Beta Sigma Phi Sweetheart Ball this weekend

The 2019 Beta Sigma Phi Annual Sweetheart Ball will be held this weekend on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Rayne Civic Center with introductions beginning at 7 p.m.
The local BSP sorority chapters will host the annual event when 30 high school girls and boys, along with senior court members, will be honored.
Young ladies selected for this honor are MaKenzie Abshire, daughter of Jason and Kelly Abshire; Hanna Babineaux, daughter of Mitchell and Simone Babineaux; Morgan Boone, daughter of Kyle and Jody Boone; Jessi Cary, daughter of Lynette and Danny Guidry and Zachary and Nicole Cary; Caroline Comeaux, daughter of John Brent and Cheryl Comeaux; Jeanne-Claire Gossen, daughter of Carla and Dwayne Gossen; Alexis Hayes, daughter of Scotty and Nancy Vautrot Hayes; Jade Louviere, daughter of Blake and Angela Louviere; Allison Moore, daughter of Wendy Moore and the late David Moore and stepfather John Tiedemann; Lindsey Ortego, daughter of Blaise and Wendy Prather and Chad Ortego; Emma Pastor, daughter of Julie and Chad Pastor; Ashlyn Ratcliff, daughter of Phil and April Faul; Caylee Royer, daughter of Brandy Royer and Eddie Royer; and Caroline Zimmerman, daughter of Jack and Gayle Zimmerman.
The slate of young gentlemen includes Matthew Abshire, son of Jason and Kelly Abshire; Wil Benoit, son of Kevin and Maureen Benoit; Caleb Bergeron, son of Shane and Dina Bergeron; Kane Bergeron, son of Jeremy and Christine Bergeron; Kameron Broussard, son of Kevin and Nicole DeJean Broussard; Wyatt Comeaux, son of Chris and Eva Comeaux; Luke Cormier, son of Ryan and Kendra Cormier; Hoden David, son of Tiffany Cart and Jody David; Zachary Fontenot, son of Scott and Mona Fontenot; Austin Gossen, son of Thomas and Nina Gossen; Cy “Deuce” Morgan II, son of Brad and Julie Lopez; Ezekiel Petitjean, son of Jonathan Petitjean; Alec Prevost, son of Jessica and Mark Prevost; Darian Richard, son of Mandy Marcantel and Benjamin Robin; and Luke Valdetero, son of Doug and Jackie Valdetero.
Ladies selected as Sweethearts from their respective BSP chapter are Paige Dupont (Gamma Kappa), Gretchen Dupuis (Preceptor Alpha Chi) and Patsy Faul (Preceptor Alpha Iota).
Girls of the Year include the following BSP members: Sarah Bergeron (Gamma Kappa), Myrna Constantin (Preceptor Alpha Chi) and Loretta Bordes (Preceptor Alpha Iota).
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with introductions beginning at 7 p.m. No tickets will be sold at the door the evening of the event - advanced ticket sales can be purchased from a Beta Sigma Phi member or 2019 junior court honorees.

Rayne arrests made following lengthly drug investigation

RAYNE - Over the course of several months, Rayne Police Department Narcotic Agents have been investigating the distribution of drug sales within the Rayne city limits.
The following individuals have been arrested as a result of the investigation:
Richard Langner - Distribution of Schedule I (Marijuana);
Wilson Caesar - Distribution of Schedule II (Crack) and Possession of Controlled Dangerous Substance in a Drug Free Zone;
Jodi Lopez - Distribution of Schedule IV (Alprazalam) and Possession of Controlled Dangerous Substance in a Drug Free Zone;
Jason McClelland - Distribution of Schedule II (Hydrocodone);
Chad Richard - Distribution of Schedule II (Meth);
Kenneth Simon - Distributon of Schedule II (Meth) and Possession of Controlled Dangerous Substance in a Drug Free Zone;
Russell Griffin - Distribution of Schedule II (Meth);
Janee Mouton - Distribution of Schedule IV (Suboxone); and
Alton Wheeler - Distribution of Schedule II (Crack), Violation of Controlled Dangerous substance in a school zone.
Also during arrest, officers located three crack rocks in Wheeler’s possession when he was located at Rayne City Court. Alton was also charged with Possession of Schedule II (Crack).

Rayne Mardi Gras Parade entries now being accepted

Rayne Chamber to host Mardi Gras Parade and After Party

RAYNE - Entries are now being accepted at the Rayne Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture for the 4th Annual Rayne Mardi Gras Parade, co-sponsored by the City of Rayne and the Rayne Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee.
The parade will be held on Saturday, March 2, and everyone is invited to participate.
Come and be a part of the fun, family safe parade with a float, trailer, vehicle or walk. All participates must complete the entry form available at the Chamber office at 107 Oak Street. Office hours are Monday thru Friday from 10 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m.
Deadline to enter with entry fee of $25 is Thursday, Feb. 28. The entry fee is to cover any expenses incurred for the event. Entry fee for all political candidates seeking office in the 2019 year is $75.
The parade line-up will begin at 2 p.m. on American Legion Drive, with the parade beginning at 3 p.m., travel along The Boulevard and South Adams Ave. and end at the Frog Festival Pavilion where the “After Parade Party” will be enjoyed again.
Immediately following the parade at the Frog Festival Pavilion, the “After Party” will be enjoyed between 4-7 p.m. Everyone is invited to come enjoy a “Chicken & Sausage Gumbo Cook-off”, BBQ hamburgers, cold drinks, music, all at no admission.
The Chamber is now taking entries for the Chicken & Sausage Gumbo Cook-Off, with no entry fee. Gumbo will be judged with plaques given to the first, second and third place, plus a “People’s Choice” award (voted by the public for $1 each entry). Entry forms with rules and regulations are available at the Chamber office.
The public will be able to sample all the gumbo entries for only $5 a bowl. Nikki Link is chairing the Gumbo Cook-off, and adds that no chests with drinks will be allowed.

Brian Mouton is chairman of the Parade, and is encouraging businesses, schools organizations, civic and church organizations, dance troupes, school bands, elected officials, political candidates, city and area royalty, and area Mardi Gras Krewes to participate.
“The first two years were successful, and unfortunately last year’s event had to be cancelled due to bad weather,” stated Chamber Executive Director Fran Bihm. “We’re thinking positive that this year’s parade will be even bigger and better than in previous years. Let’s show visitors and locals they don’t have to travel to New Orleans and outside Acadia Parish to enjoy a family friendly and safe Mardi Gras Parade on this date.”
